In Special Education NEVER assume what a student can do. It's easy to get caught up in test scores etc. and forget we are working with unique individuals.

Ever wondered why students who have Autism repeat phrases over and over? Here is a really good explanation by Amethyst Schraber.

What is scripting? Amethyst breaks down the differences between two related (but different) behaviors: echolalial scripting and social scripting. Both can be very common among those on the spectrum -- but is it a behavior that should be discouraged? What spurs them on?

This is a fantastic resource by Rebecca Burgess.

What do you think of this?

This is a very good report. I've been saying this for some time now. We are now going to have an influx of adults with autism and I'm not sure we are prepared.

The family want to take Kreed home. Their medical bills are astronomical and neither parent have been able to work because Kreed had to go to a hospital far from their home. Every little bit helps.

Our hero Kreed passed away yesterday and we are making arrangements to send Kreed back to his home in Arizona and arrange a small family funeral. The costs of this are continuing to go up, so our friends have prompted us to start a fundraiser. Please don't feel obligated to donate but please share share share. Our son Kreed lived an amazing life full of so much joy. He wanted to fill each day with as much happiness as possible and the best way for anyone to remember him is to approach each day that way. Thank you to everyone for your kind thoughts and at some point we will be able to respond more. We are still in shock and sadness and the tears fall every minute. Our life will never be the same.

THIS IS FROM A FAMILY I KNOW ... does anyone have suggestions for what to do regarding birthday parties etc? This young man wants a party and play a few video games - would be grateful for ideas.... Thank you.
See Mum's post below:

Brakes my heart listening to my son say "it's ok mum" when I sit down and try to explain that only one has replied to his birthday invites and they are not coming :'(
All I can say is "ITS NOT BLOODY OK" His turning 10 years old. A milestone that means a lot to both me and him, see! He was diagnosed with high functioning autism back when he was 3yrs old, told he wouldn't speak, he wouldn't understand, he would never go to mainstream school and he will never have a normal life. Well WE proved them wrong.... Years of therapy and he is now a healthy 9yr old boy that CAN speak his own mind, that DOES goes to mainstream school, that DOES have problems making new friends and keeping up with the old ones AND he does have feelings :'(
Now! I'm devastated and don't know what to do. I have had massive parties in the past where I have wasted thousands of dollars on their 1st and 2nd birthdays.... Everyone turned up.... Now I'm struggling each week and organised a sleepover with his closest mates that know him so well and have put up with him all these years and I'm so grateful to them... But not to their parents.
I'd like to say Thanks to all the times you didn't allow your son to come over and play. Thanks to the few times you did so my son could learn how to socialise. But most of all id like to say a massive thank you to braking my sons heart. I can't makeup an invisible party, my mother (his nan) would be so devastated to see her grandson so left out. He lost his Nan as she passed away, then his cat, then his uncle who took his own life, then the rest of his cousins and family, from family separated and not talking, his father.... Now his friends.
What am I to do? Honestly what do I do?

Autism awareness-people are talking about it and saying they want to make a difference but I see nothing but struggles from people that think it's a disease... It's not.

I feel so happy that Kreed is feeling so much better.

I feel so happy that Kreed is feeling so much better.

Our boy went from raging for hours and hours at home and doing nonstop self abusive things like bashing in his skull, causing 2 significant hematomas on either side of his skull and biting his toes and feet so bad that he always had to huge bleeding gaping wounds to kicking in the windshield over and over! It was all from pain! Severe nerve pain in his legs and hands and migraines. He eventually stopped sleeping for 3-4 days at a time and then out of the blue stopped walking completely. This is when it really took a turn for the worse! He had to be carried everywhere or used his wheelchair and held his legs up for hours from pain and also eventually even stopped getting up to use the bathroom and stopped eating and drinking. We knew there was nothing more we could do for him at home. We finally ended up at Denver hospital where their top metabolic Dr looked over his tests from birth and did many tests and a spinal tap and finally has come up with a pretty good idea what his diagnosis will be! It will take 6 weeks or so to 100% confirm the diagnosis but at least we are close! We have found a pain med that significantly helps his legs and he gets B-12 injections in the muscle to help lower his very high homocysteine level which no one has ever cared about or looked further at even though it has always been high and it helped lead to his diagnosis and will be his continued treatment! We are so lucky! It took moving here, going to Denver, getting this one Dr who is only 1 of 2 Dr's in the U.S. to even diagnose this, and it took us trusting them and them taking his pain and symptoms seriously!
It has been a long long road, but if In the end our child is now walking and in much less pain and some of his conditions will be helped significantly or even reversed it'll all be worth it!
In our wildest dreams we never thought they would find an answer to why he has all the medical issues that he has! His diagnosis is super rare, if everything didn't line up like it did, we probably would've never got a diagnosis or ever have known what is wrong in his body! It's almost too good to be true! Even the doctors seeing him walk again and so much happier had tears in their eyes!
*Zebra: In medicine, a very unlikely diagnostic possibility. It comes from an old saying used in teaching medical students about how to think logically in regard to the differential diagnosis: 'When you hear hoof beats, think of horses, not zebras.
