This is such a common question I get from parents who are trying to build a healthy Microbiome for their child. Yes, antibiotics can definitely change the balance of a developing microbiome and prenatal or early antibiotic use is a strong indicator for paediatric microbiome testing. But it isn’t the end of the world! Your baby’s microbiome is very malleable in first few years and recovery is possible.
The very best thing you can do is to continue to provide breastmilk, which is the best source of Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMO’s). Those HMO’s feed the beneficial Bifidobacteria that are vital for supporting a developing digestive and immune system. If that’s impossible then we can look at replacement prebiotics and probiotics to replace them.
If your baby did need early antibiotic treatment or you are seeing early signs of gut or immune dysfunction then we can start to test and support the microbiome from as early as 3 months old.
