Did you know that you can still register to watch presentations from the 2022 National Deafblind Conference?

The conference was hugely successful in professional collaborations, learning outcomes and educational opportunities, and building connections within the deafblind community.

The theme of the conference was “Deafblind Keeping Connected through COVID and beyond” and over three days of presentations, keynote and invited speakers, platform presenters, and people with lived experience shared academic views, research outcomes and their personal reflections on the impact the global pandemic has had on the deafblind community.

11th National Deafblind Conference starts this week at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle.

We are very excited with only two days to go until the 11th National Deafblind Conference.

The theme for the conference is “Deafblind Keeping Connected through COVID and beyond”.

The latest research developments and service improvements in the specialised world of deafblindness will be showcased. This conference is an opportunity to learn from one another, for professional collaborations, education to the broader community on the support needs of people who are deafblind, friendships and networks to develop and a national agenda of important issues to be established.

The main conference will be held from 30 June - 1 July at Esplanade Hotel Fremantle by Rydges, with Conference Hubs in Melbourne and Newcastle. Pre-conference sessions will take place on 29 June.
Additionally, the conference will be offered virtually for those unable to attend in person.

“G’Day my name is Dan Talko and I have Usher syndrome type 2A and I’m dam proud of it. I spent a lot of my life trying to hide and pretend that I didn’t have it but, in the end, when I opened up when I was vulnerable, when I was able to own it I was able to then be my true self and become so much better. I want to show you how not to do it.”

Dan Talko will join SensesWA to share his own personal story of living with Usher syndrome at the upcoming National Deafblind Conference.

Sheridan Foster will join SensesWA to speak at the 11th National Deafblind Conference. Sheridan is a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist. In 2011, she completed doctoral studies, looking at interactions between adults with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities and their support staff and currently combines research, training and practice. She focuses on contributing to best practice in the communication support of adults with disabilities.

Sheridan will present on the topic:

We are delighted to have Dr Peter Simcock as a key not speaker at the 11th National Deafblind Conference. Peter is Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Birmingham City University, UK. Prior to working in social work education, he was a specialist social worker with d/Deaf and deafblind people and has a long-standing practice and research interest in deafblindness.

Peter will present on the topic:

The theme “Deafblind Keeping Connected through COVID and beyond” will support connection and reconnecting people with deafblindness and those who support them across Australia.

The latest research developments and service improvements in the specialised world of deafblindness will be showcased. The conference will have a mix of keynote presentations, panel discussions and workshops covering a broad range of topics.

Pre-conference sessions on 29 June
