The diet industry profits off you thinking that your body is a problem that needs fixing, by they’re selling false hope. Your body is good enough exactly as it is. Regardless of your body shape or size, you deserve freedom from food rules and body shame.

What does it mean to be a non-diet dietitian? For me, it means that I care about someone’s relationship to food and eating, not just what and how much they eat. It means supporting my clients to eat in a way that helps them feel well physically AND mentally. It means freedom from food rules and body shame… for myself and well as my clients!

It’s not ok to assume that a fat person is unfit based purely on their size. For all you know, they could be fitter than the thin person standing next to them 💪🏼 Even if someone in a larger body isn’t that fit or strong, it doesn’t mean they’re a less worthy person.

People of all body shapes and sizes can benefit from engaging in movement and deserve support to do so if they want to. If you want to explore moving your body in a non-diet way, I recommend getting in touch with Ellen at .movement.space or Deb at .and.movement ☺️

If you’ve worked hard to overcome a restrictive eating disorder, it can feel really scary to feel out of control with eating. I promise that it’s not your body working against you! It’s actually a very normal experience and it makes sense when you consider that your body is trying to keep you alive.

If you’ve barely survived a ‘famine’ (which is what restriction feels like to your body), your body is going to do whatever it can to be better prepared for the next famine. That means eating as much as it can when it has the chance. To calm things down, you need to reassure your body that there isn’t going to be another famine. The way to do that is to keep eating regularly and adequately so that your body trusts that there will always be food.

I know that it’s scary, but you can do it! If you need support right now to navigate recovery, you can reach out to today by calling 1800 ED HOPE 🦋

I understand that the pressure right now to be thin can feel overwhelming, even if someone has been diet-free for a while. It’s no wonder so many people are considering weight loss injections. I’m against the diet culture that tells people they should be losing weight, not the individual exposed to that culture.

If someone is curious about trying weight loss injections, they should be able to talk about it openly with their care provider without feeling shamed. For me, this means sharing information with my clients and answering their questions in a non-judgemental way to help them make informed choices.

🌼 Reflection prompt 🌼 What would caring for your body look and feel like if the focus wasn’t on shrinking it? How could you show up for yourself in a more caring way if you weren’t trying to lose weight? Just something to think about if you’re feeling stuck in the diet cycle at the moment 🙂

Here’s something the diet industry doesn’t want you to know: Most people who lose weight by dieting end up regaining all they weigh they lose. In fact, weight regain is actually your body trying to protect your health.

Why doesn’t the diet industry want you to know this? Because selling (short term) weight loss to people is a billion dollar industry, and as long as you think weight regain is YOUR failure, you’ll be tempted back to spend more money.

It’s ok to be fat. Not, “It’s ok to be fat, as long as you’re healthy” and definitely not “It’s ok to be fat if you’re trying to lose weight” 🙅🏻‍♀️

Do you relate to my experience? The more I tried to control my eating (to control my weight), the more I lost trust in my body to tell me what, when, and how much food I needed. I became disconnected from my body’s natural appetite rhythm and stopped honoring my cravings. The more I tried to control, the more out of control I felt.

Discovering the concept of intuitive eating helped me rebuild trust and feel calm about eating again. If diet culture didn’t exist, intuitive eating would just be the normal way of eating - it wouldn’t be something revolutionary. It’s how we were born to eat! But diet culture gets in the way of this innate ability.

The good news is that you can learn how to eat intuitively again. It’s possible to feel more trusting of your body and find your way to a pattern of eating that is flexible, nourishing, and enjoyable. This is what I help my clients with and the change this makes to their life is incredible!

Recovery is a long and hard journey, and it’s easy to feel down on yourself at times. Challenging negative self-talk with self-kindness is important for a many reasons, including to:
🌻 Promote healthier coping mechanisms

🌻 Break the cycle of perfectionism

🌻 Encourage a growth mindset

🌻 Build resilience

Here’s a challenge for you to try: At least once a day, take a moment to say something kind to yourself. If you get stuck on what to say, think about what a friend or loved one would say to you.
