There's subtle whispers of autumn but we're not quite there yet 😳

The heat the last few days has been intense again 🥵 but we do love the growing softness of the nights and the coolness of the pre-dawn morning.

It's our unique version of Perth's movement into autumn. Not the postcard golden colours of other parts of the world, but a lovely reminder that change doesn't always happen how we expect it to.

Moving from the fire of summer (Pitta season) to the cool and movement of autumn (Vata season) naturally shifts how we experience the world. We're saying goodbye to the freedom of long, dusky nights and the joyfulness of immersing in the sun and ocean - and hello to colder, darker, more unpredictable days.

This is the nature of seasonal change, but right now, it mirrors so much of what we're experiencing in our modern lives. Constant movement, endless information, anxiety about what's ahead, and rarely enough stillness to truly connect – with ourselves or each other.

The constant movement and change can cause our inner energies to be knocked out of balance.

And so the invitation from Ayurveda is to do the opposite! Embrace the transition to Vata season to find stillness within movement, to practice steadiness in heart, mind and body.

There was a time in my life when I had no pauses in my day.

Olive was a little puppy, and I used to get up before sunrise to take her to the beach. If she didn't get out first thing, it was likely she wasn't going for a walk until much later that day 🫣

We're blessed with such beautiful beaches, and it was the best way to start the day. Except I couldn't stop my mind thinking about what had to happen next.

It was the beginning of constant momentum.

Home for breakfast. Then to the train station. Answering emails on the train - because even being outside of the office doesn't stop the work from happening! Walking from the station to the office (when I used to work in the city!). Work non-stop all day.

It didn't stop at 5pm though 😳 After work, I'd rush back to the train to teach my evening Mala class.

Finally, around 8pm, it was collapse onto the couch for dinner and puppy cuddles.

I never really felt like I stopped moving and doing. Can you relate?

It seems like most of us don't ever have the opportunity to slow down and just be.

It's why we start purposefully and slowly in class. It's most likely the first pause of your day, the first moment to check in and ask "hey, how am I really feeling?".

It's when you get to notice the subtle shifts in your body as you inhale and exhale. How in the simple act of being still and breathing, you can be witness to the movement of energy in your body.

Inhale, exhale.

Prana, apana.

Expanding, grounding.

Your nervous system starting to calm, releasing stress from your body and mind. And on a more subtle level, helping you move towards a meditational and tranquil state of being 🥰

I should’ve known I was doomed the moment someone called dibs on a window seat.

Back when I worked in an office job, I had the thankless task of organising an office move for 100+ people.

You know what big teams (and egos 😆) are like. Everyone wanted the best seats. Everyone thought their team was the most important. And everyone wanted me to perform miracles with a floor plan.

It took weeks of negotiating, rearranging, and a little "sorry, it is what it is" to make it all work.

The relief of finishing and then taking my boss, the ultimate decision maker on all things, to tour the space was a sweet feeling.

I knew he'd love his corner office with views of the river. I'd kept all of the important people close to him.

We did a complete loop of the floor, and then he turns to me: "So, we're actually not going to move floors anymore".

This happened over 15 years ago and for some reason this moment has always stuck with me. Mostly because one of the other bosses on the tour told me later, "I can't believe the way you handled that" 🫣

So do you think I lost my 💩? It's a fair assumption, especially after the stress and expectation of the month of planning.

I looked down at my black, shiny heels. My brain was scrambling. My heart pounding. I was sucking in deep belly breaths (thank you pranayama!): "Of course, whatever you want".

The reason I remember this small but significant moment so much is not because of the annoyance of the change - that's just what happens working for others.

It was one of those moments when I felt my life infused by my Yoga practice. The calmness and resilience I felt wasn't something my brain told me to do. It was an innate, embodied response, my nervous system stable enough to not be thrown into turmoil at someone else's whim.

It shows that after consistent practice, two magical things happen.

The first is a sense of harmony that infuses life, the knowing of being in the right place, doing the right thing, and feeling in sync with nature and the universe.

Secondly - and what was important to me that day - the building of resilience that you need to navigate the complexities and challenges of your daily happenings.

Triangles are considered to be one of the strongest shapes. They can withstand pressure and weight without changing shape, and are used in many of the most iconic architectural masterpieces - think the Great Pyramids, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Pyramid.

When you look at the soles of your feet, you don't see triangles. But they are in there! The essential structure of your foot can be represented as a triangle, with these three points supporting you in standing positions.

These points - at your heel, the base of your little toe and the base of your big toe - help to ground you, both in practice and in life.

Learning to activate these three points, and in turn the musculature of the feet, is one of the best ways to bring vitality, strength and adaptability to your feet.

And touching your soles to grass, sand or water is one of the quickest ways to connect with nature and the softness and grounding that follows.

Being grounded in practice and in nature cultivates mindfulness and stillness. It allows you to embrace stillness not just as the absence of movement, but as a powerful space created through intentional pauses.

The pauses of your breath.

The pauses between each task.

The pauses to play with your children.

The pauses to stroke your dog.

The pauses to hug your loved one.

All of the pauses supporting the nervous system’s natural ability to rest and reset, each intentional pause retraining your thoughts and actions so you can be in harmony with life and nature.

Every moment of every day, we take in the many sounds of our environment.

The traffic and birdsong, sirens and gentle music, planes overhead and the sound of the waves.

Just reading these sounds can evoke the emotions of actually hearing them. Some harmonious and sweet, others harsh and disturbing.

Whether you feel it or not, sound affects the physiology of your body. Any sound that annoys you can trigger a stress response (like waking up to a 3am angle grinder. Yes, that actually happened at our house 🙄).

Sound is so powerful that we can also use it as a healing tool. In the same way that annoying sounds trigger the stress response (your sympathetic nervous system), soothing sounds can trigger the calm and rest response (your parasympathetic nervous system).

Listening to the sound of the trees when out walking, drifting off to the sound of gentle waves on the sand. The music played as you enter the Mala studio.

All of these sounds activate the healing process of our bodies 💕

So when you anchor yourself in sound for 1.5 hours... quite incredible things can happen.

Ready to experience this for yourself? Join us on Sunday 22 February at 3pm for our Sound Bath + Yin class.

Here’s what’s waiting for you:

😌 Deep relaxation for your nervous system - soothing sounds help your body shift into a natural state of rest and recovery, lowering stress and tension.

🧘🏻‍♀️ Mental stillness and peace - gentle tones quiet the mind’s chatter and invite a calm, present awareness.

❤️‍🩹 Emotional refresh and healing - vibrations encourage release of tension and promote balance, leaving you feeling renewed.

If you’re looking for a place to find healing and peace, this class is for you - no experience needed, just an open heart.

Yoga philosophy teaches us that there are four classical goals in life - dharma (purpose in life), artha (the means to accomplish your dharma), k**a (pleasure) and moksha (liberation, true freedom).

Learning to honour all four goals is key to achieving fulfilment in life.

Moving towards the fulfilment of each of these goals requires energy - what Yoga calls Prana. More specifically, it depends on a form of Prana known as Udana.

Udana is the energy within that helps us to reach these goals in life. It helps us to take action, to be expressive and to find liberation.

While these ancient goals and energies have guided humanity for centuries, today’s modern lifestyle presents new challenges that can disrupt our natural flow of Udana energy - one of the biggest being our constant connection to phones and social media.

So how do you know if your Udana energy is in balance?

Your phone - probably in your hand right now - is one of the biggest drains on your Udana energy 🫣

Persistent dinging, doom scrolling and information overwhelm overload your nervous system. All of the mental clutter is overstimulating and exhausting, and disrupts Udana's role in maintaining clarity, focus and uplifting your energy.

You might take countless photos for a single post, editing, filtering, adding quirky comments and trending music to create a perfectly curated image - while unintentionally stifling your genuine self-expression. Distorting or suppressing your true voice can drain Udana, leading to blocked or inauthentic self-expression.

How about your posture? Most times, we're slouched or hunched over when on the phone, physically restricting the chest and throat areas where Udana flows. This weakens the natural upward movement of Udana, diminishing vitality.

Udana is our main positive energy, yet a lot of the time we're unconsciously suppressing this vibrant, motivating force.

If you’re seeking more lightness, creativity, and inspiration in your life, now is the time to nurture this subtle energy ✨

Because we all have important things to do in this life, and it's crucial that we all have the energy to do this ❤️
