You've most likely heard the 21 day myth... the one where you can create a new habit in 21 days.

How amazing would that be?!

Sadly this myth doesn't truly set us up for success. It oversimplifies what is a complex process when making change in life. Depending upon what your change is, it could actually take anywhere from 18 to 254 days 😳

Thousands of years of Yogic science can help though, with the guiding principle of tapas.

Ready to transform your life? Tapas can help.

Generating tapas means to cultivate inner heat - the energy and drive to do things that are challenging. To have self-discipline, the inner fire and the willingness to make choices for the sake of your own growth and transformation.

It's not about being harsh to yourself or punishing yourself when you trip up. It's about consistently choosing actions that align with your higher goals (hence why sankalpa/setting an intention is such an important aspect of practice!).

Tapas teaches us that small, consistent actions are more effective than random efforts. So attending one Yoga class every week will create more transformation than a 5 day retreat once a year.

Tapas encourages a welcoming attitude towards discomfort, knowing that this is part of growth rather than something to avoid. Like how your ab muscles feel after doing Mat Pilates with Benji 😆 (true story, my (Jaccy!) abs were telling me all about Tuesday's Pilates class!).

And knowing that cultivating tapas means freedom. Creating structure and routine in life, creating positive habits to support your wellbeing. Greater freedom and fulfilment in life because you know deep down that you are capable of doing hard things!

This week you'll be focusing on cultivating tapas both on and off the mat. In class we'll explore this through variations of the balance posture Svarga Dvijasana, or Bird of Paradise.

Bird of Paradise pose is not the goal by any means - the intention this week is to work on tapas so that you can blossom into your own uniqueness ✨

The start of the week at our home is now lovingly called "Kitchari Monday" 🥰

Kitchari is a simple, nourishing Ayurvedic dish - a comforting blend of digestive spices, rice, lentils and grounding vegetables. It's become an essential part of our routine to support the digestive system after a weekend of indulgence 😁🍷🍕🧁

The magic of kitchari lies in it's balance: it's light yet nutrient rich, allowing the digestive system to rest and recover, clear away toxins and restore balance. The spices also act as a spark to kindle agni, the digestive fire 🔥

Agni, the principle of fire in the universe is revered as the transforming force responsible for the evolution of one substance into another.

Ayurveda emphasises the physical role of agni - balancing our digestive fire for optimum health, which is why kitchari is such an important part of a balanced diet.

Yoga emphasises the subtle role of fire - using prana and meditation on the journey to enlightenment.

And according to Ta**ra, the abdominal centre is the seat of fire, helping to burn through the limitations of the lower chakras and clear away obstructions so that our true light can shine forward 🌟

Transformation is necessary for us to bloom in life, but it doesn't always feel comfortable. Creating new habits, setting off into the unknown, letting go of the past that no longer serves you... all require commitment, effort and that inner spark to create movement in the direction of your soul's desire.

Yoga practice is a very special tool to help with transformation on all levels, and this week you're going to be kindling this fire in our Hatha classes with Navasana (boat pose).

Movement, breath and meditation will be skillfully and thoughtfully woven together to build your inner fire - creating light, heat and purification on all levels of being 💕

Do you have to believe in Yoga for it to work?

Let's try an experiment.

Connect the soles of both feet to the floor.

Sit up tall and roll your shoulders back.

Soften your eyes, place a hand on your belly.

Inhale into your belly, then exhale from your belly.

Inhale into your belly again and count to 4, then exhale and count to 4.

Do this again. And again. And again until you feel... something.

What is that? Calm, clarity, softness...

Technically - you've just practiced the Yogic techniques of sama vritti and adham pranayama. But we generally call this belly breathing 😊

So, to come back to the question - did you have to believe in anything for the practices to work?

You'll find that the answer is no - because breathing and moving is so natural for us, and Yoga's mind-body practices aren't trying to make you believe anything. They are simply helping to optimise human functioning.

Adding layers to this type of experience is what we do in class, moving and breathing in sync to create a feeling, an inner sensation.

One powerful way to experience the full mind-body-breath experience is with Setu Bandha Sarvangasana - or what we generally called Bridge Pose.

A simple yet powerful shape, Bridge Pose provides an opportunity to feel and appreciate the movement of your whole body and breath as one.

Up and down, inhale and exhale, moving breath and body together to energise, rejuvenate and restore ❤️

Being Kapha season, we're tending towards variations of Bridge that are active, opening your chest and heart space and integrating movement through all parts of the body with your vitalising breath ☺️

✨ New class ✨ Mat Pilates starts this month

We’re thrilled to introduce you to a brand new class starting this month - and it’s not Yoga 🫣

Welcome to Mat Pilates with Benji 💕

Benji is a Holistic Health Coach, Group Fitness Instructor, Yoga Teacher and Pilates Instructor and brings with him over a decade of practice, training and experience to Mala 😊

Whether you’re looking to strengthen your core, improve flexibility or enhance overall body awareness, our Mat Pilates class will be the perfect complement to your current Yoga or other fitness practice.

❓What is Pilates and how is it different to Yoga?

Yoga and Pilates share some similarities, however they’re distinct in their approach. As you’ll already know from practice with us, Yoga focuses on the integration of asana (movement) with pranayama (breathing), focusing on all aspects of your being - body, mind and spirit. Pilates, on the other hand, zeroes in on core strength, body alignment and controlled movements to improve posture, balance and muscular endurance.

As with our Yoga classes, our Mat Pilates classes are for everyone. From those recovering from injuries to seasoned athletes, from brand new students to experienced practitioners.

❓What’s the Mala Mat Pilates class going to be like?

Here’s where we’re different: no ego, no competition, just movement that feels good for your body. We believe that health and wellness should be sustainable, approachable and enjoyable for everyone. Our Mat Pilates classes are designed to meet you where you are, with safe and effective techniques to help you feel strong, supported and connected to your body.

❓What is the price for the Mat Pilates classes?

We don’t believe in charging a premium for Pilates classes. All of our classes - including our new Mat Pilates class - are included in your current pass or membership, so you can explore and enjoy without any added costs.

🌟 Our first Mat Pilates class will be on Tuesday 22 July at 6am 🌟

If you've ever asked us for a book suggestion, one of our top picks is not actually a Yoga book - it's a breathing book.

It might seem odd to learn about something you already know how to do - breathing is an automatic action in the body so you don't even have to think about doing it!

However when you know how to consciously breathe - when you understand the ways to change your breath to clear your mind, balance your nervous system or create focus - your breath becomes a very powerful tool.

The average number of breaths a person takes per day is 21,600 😳

Doesn't that seem incredibly fast?? Your nervous system would be going into (or more than likely already is) overly activated in fight/flight/freeze/fawn mode 🫣

In practice with us, you usually breathe in for at least 4 seconds, and then out for at least 4 seconds. Which is much closer to the optimal 6 to 10 breaths per minute.

It's one of the reasons why you feel so calmly energised after practice.

When you take longer breaths, you can soak up more oxygen, reduce stress and calm your nervous system. Our breath is essential for our health and wellbeing, yet most of us are not breathing in a health-creating way.

One of the best movements for expanding breath capacity are side stretches 🙆🏻‍♀️

They feel so good! They're also so important for the health of your body.

Taking the time to focus on lengthening from the hips to the tips of your fingers helps to stretch the muscles that support your ideal posture, and also create freedom for more breath to move through your body.

A favourite in the side stretching category is Parighasana, or Gate pose, a pose to energise and bring awareness to the sides of your body.

There's an invitation this week to pause in Parighasana, seeing how it feels to create space in your body, providing the spark of inspiration to make space in life too.

Special events and workshops are a portal to deepening your practice.

Gratitude expands, understanding blossoms and your connection to the ancient teachings is amplified when you invest a little more time to learn about what yoga is beyond asana.

We have two beautiful events coming up to help advance your practice and we'd love for you to join us 😊

🌟 Food as Medicine: An Ayurvedic approach to nourishment 🌟

Saturday 12 July - 10am to 1pm

According to Ayurveda, where, when and how you eat is just as important as what you eat. In this workshop, you’ll learn about the Ayurvedic perspective on diet (ahara), digestion, nutrition and mindful eating and discover the Ayurvedic concept of agni.

Agni is the inner fire that helps us to digest our food and life experiences into energy and nourishment. When agni is low, it’s hard to digest food, you might feel heavy or sluggish. If agni is too high, there could be too much heat in your digestion, creating a burning sensation within.

Learn how to enhance the function of agni through simple lifestyle changes and explore practical eating tweaks that align with Ayurvedic principles.

You’ll practice a revitalising agni-inspired yoga practice, designed to stimulate your digestive fire, enhance metabolism, and promote overall balance within your body and mind. Nourish your inner fire and embrace a vibrant, balanced life through the timeless wisdom of Ayurveda and yoga.

My first experience of Ayurvedic food was this little white recipe book I bought from a Yoga studio. To my mind, it was incredibly complicated 🤯 detailing many things that I found too hard, arduous and time consuming to do.

Grinding grains to make my own flour? Not going to happen.

Remembering to soak lentils and nuts overnight? I'd forget - both to soak the nuts and use the soaked nuts 😆

For a long time, I didn't feel that I was eating "Ayurvedically". That was something other people did, people with more skills and time than I was prepared to commit to my food.

I had the misconception that eating Ayurvedically was about a special diet, preparing complicated dishes and using spices I couldn't even pronounce (asafoetida??).

But I'm here to tell you that you can eat Ayurvedically without any of that complication 🙌

I know you're asking how...?

And I'm excited to be able to tell you!

On Saturday 12 July, 10am to 1pm, I'll be presenting my next workshop Food As Medicine – An Ayurvedic approach to nourishment.

There will be a little bit of the "what" to eat, but what I'm really passionate about sharing with you is where, when and how to eat. The practical, easy to implement practices that will transform your digestion.

Because in Ayurveda, digestion is so important. So we'll also be talking a lot about agni, the digestive fire.

I'll also be taking you through a revitalising agni-inspired Yoga practice, designed to stimulate your digestive fire, enhance metabolism, and promote overall balance within your body and mind.

Visit our website to book your place.

All you need is an interest in learning how to improve your health and vitality - no Yoga or Ayurveda experience necessary! Send us a message if you've got any questions.
