When people ask what I do as a doula, sometimes I get stuck in my answer.
Not because I don’t know - but because there are so many layers to the role, and every family needs something different.
How I support one person may look completely different to how I support another.
It’s always personal, always tailored, always responsive to what is needed in that moment.
A doula is someone who is of service.
We serve you.
Every doula may look different, bring different skills, and show up in their own unique way - but at the heart of it, we are there to serve.
That service can take many forms, depending on the needs of the family we are supporting.
Primarily, a doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and practical support throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
We hold space - offering calm, reassurance, and steady presence during what can be an intense and transformative time.
We support not only the birthing person, but also their partner.
This might look like guiding husbands or partners on how to provide comfort, encouraging their involvement, or simply helping them feel more confident and grounded in their role.
Physically, we may offer comfort measures such as massage, breathing guidance, and helping create a soothing environment.
Logistically, support can be as simple and as important as setting up a birth space, filling a birth pool, gathering supplies, or helping things flow smoothly so the family can stay focused on the moment.
We also provide education - helping families understand their options, prepare for birth, and feel informed and empowered in their choices.
Above all, a doula listens. We adapt. We respond to what is needed in each moment. Whether that means being hands-on, quietly present, or stepping back to support the partner, our role is to serve in a way that feels aligned with the family’s needs.
In essence, a doula walks alongside - offering support, care, and presence every step of the way.
