We had a great day at Murdoch TAFE today supporting the Certificate IV Youth Work students for their project-led Mental Health Awareness Day šŸ’š

As part of their studies, the students have been delivering EleV8, a social and emotional wellbeing program, to Year 11 and 12 VET students on campus. It was wonderful to be involved in such a meaningful initiative and see the passion these future youth workers bring to supporting young people in our community.

Thank you for having us and for creating such an engaging and important event!

Trauma can feel like carrying a weight no one else can see. Some days it’s heavy, other days it’s lighter. And sometimes, we don’t even realise how much we’re holding until it starts to weigh us down.

To learn more about trauma, head to our link in bio. šŸ”—

05/05/2026

Traumatic events and experiences can take many forms and understanding the impact of them can help family better support young people and respond with care and compassion.

1ļøāƒ£ Acute/Single Incident trauma can be experienced after a single, overwhelming traumatic event such as a car accident. Even one experience can have a lasting impact on how a young person thinks, feels, or responds to the world around them.

2ļøāƒ£Complex trauma can develop when a young person is exposed to stressful and traumatic experiences over a long period of time. These experiences can build up and affect their sense of safety, relationships, and wellbeing.

3ļøāƒ£Vicarious trauma can occur when someone is deeply affected by witnessing or hearing about distressing experiences happening to others, especially those they know, care about, or feel connected to.

4ļøāƒ£Intergenerational trauma refers to trauma that can be passed down through families or communities across generations, often linked to histories of injustice, displacement, colonisation or cultural loss.

Every young person’s experience of trauma is different. Taking time to listen and respond with understanding can help them feel supported and less alone. šŸ’š

Join our free online group chat for parents and carers- Navigating A Young Person’s Growing Independence, on Wed 6 May 2026, 6:30pm AEST (join or leave at any time)

As young people grow, their needs and interests can change. They may start exploring new spaces, learning more about themselves, and taking on new experiences. Over time, this can also shape how much independence they seek.
For carers and parents, navigating these changes can involve finding a balance between supporting a young person’s development while also helping them stay safe and on track.

For many First Nations peoples, conducting or receiving a Welcome to Country is an important cultural practice that has been maintained by First Nations people for thousands of years. A Welcome to Country is an important reminder that we all live on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lands and is a mark of respect for Country, Elders, Traditional Owners and Culture.

Here at headspace, we remain committed to supporting the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and to creating spaces where culture is recognised, respected and valued. We know that a strong sense of identity, Culture and belonging is central to social and emotional wellbeing. When Culture is not respected, it can have a deep impact on how young people see themselves and their place in the world.

To any First Nations young people who feel hurt, frustrated, upset or affected by the booing during the Welcome to Country at some ANZAC Day services, we see you. Your Culture is something to be proud of, and it deserves to be respected. If you or anyone you know needs support or someone to yarn with, you can always call 13YARN or Lifeline for crisis support, or reach out to headspace via the link: https://headspace.org.au/online-and-phone-support/connect-with-us/
