📣 Medicare Update - Speech Pathology
A quick update for families: New Medicare item numbers for certain speech disorders commenced TODAY (1 March)!
This is a new pathway (separate to the usual CDM plan) and may apply to children and young people under 25 who have diagnosed speech disorders such as:
• Stuttering
• Persistent speech sound disorder
• Childhood apraxia of speech
• Dysarthria
• Speech differences associated with cleft lip and/or palate
For eligible children, Medicare can provide rebates for:
• Up to 8 assessment sessions
• Up to 20 treatment sessions
• $87.25 rebate per session (current rate)
As this has only just commenced, some GPs may still be becoming familiar with the referral process.
A formal diagnosis and GP referral under the correct item number are required, and not all children with speech difficulties will meet criteria.
If you’re unsure whether this applies to your child, we’re very happy to talk it through and guide you on next steps.
