National Pain Week: Celebrating Our Specialist, Dr Tim Hucker

At Northern Beaches Hospital, we’re proud to spotlight one of our leading pain specialists, Dr Tim Hucker, during National Pain Week. As a specialist pain physician and founder of Northern Beaches Pain, Dr Hucker champions an integrated, holistic approach to pain management right here at Northern Beaches Hospital.

“Chronic back and neck pain is endemic everywhere, including on the Northern Beaches, along with joint arthritis in the knees and shoulders,” explains Dr Hucker. “But there’s no need to suffer in silence.”

Dr Tim Hucker and his team work in a collaborative way with multidisciplinary colleagues offering patient-centred treatments, from non-surgical interventions to long-term rehabilitation, “We build realistic, sustainable plans that help people take back control with personalised targeted pain relief.” He emphasises, “Pain relief should support a person’s ability to move and live fully, not mask symptoms. The goal is to rehabilitate, not medicate.”

At Northern Beaches Hospital and through Northern Beaches Pain, Dr Hucker and his team are dedicated to helping patients regain independence, reduce medication reliance, and return to vibrant living—providing expert support every step of the way.

Chronic pain is an extremely common issue effecting the lives of 1 in 5 Australians aged 45 and over. Although we know it is prevalent in both men and women, chronic pain effects a much higher proportion of women than men worldwide and is often undermanaged and left untreated.

Pain relating to arthritis, nerve pain disorders such as trigeminal neuralgia and migraines disproportionally affect women. Reasons for this disparity may include hormonal and genetic factors. There can also be pain after medical treatments, such as nerve pain related to chemotherapy or after surgery in patients with breast cancer.
It is important that women do not disregard pain and leave it untreated. If you are experiencing prolonged pain, see your trusted GP and they may refer you to an experienced pain specialist.

Lest we forget.

April 25th is an important day where we honour the brave men and women who served and continue to serve in the Australian and New Zealand Armed Forces. Their courage, sacrifice and selflessness will never be forgotten. This can be a very difficult day for many returned servicemen and women who have been exposed to numerous physical and psychological traumas during their service, which can contribute to the development of chronic pain.

It has been reported that men who serve in the military are almost twice as likely to experience PTSD and one fifth will report it within five years of leaving the defence force. Other mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety are also common in these veterans, so it is essential we offer our support to those suffering when available.

In addition to the psychological distress, many veterans may suffer from chronic pain as a result of the physical injuries sustained during their service. These may include fractures, joint damage, and back injuries to name a few.

The consequences of chronic pain in ANZAC veterans are significant, impacting their overall quality of life and ability to work which can lead to social isolation and increased risk of developing mental health issues if not already. When managing chronic pain, an approach that addresses both physical and psychological factors is encouraged. This may include physical therapy, psychological counselling, social support, pain management and medication depending on the individuals’ circumstances.

If you or someone you know is experiencing chronic pain, see your trusted GP and they may refer you to an experienced pain specialist such as Dr Tim Hucker from Northern Beaches Pain Management.

International Women’s day is a celebration of all the achievements women from around the world have accomplished. It is also an opportunity to empower and remind women to make informed decisions about their health and seek help when required.

Chronic pain is an extremely common issue effecting the daily lives of 1 in 5 Australians aged 45 and over. Although we know it is prevalent within both genders, chronic pain effects a much higher proportion of women than men worldwide and is often under managed and left untreated. In the past, pain issues effecting women were poorly recognised and often disregarded, however more women are diagnosed with chronic pain as we set out to understand more about certain pain conditions and how they may affect sexes differently.

Despite this positive step, many people remain unaware of the conditions that disproportionately affect women such as pain related to arthritis, nerve pain disorders such as tri-geminal neuralgia and migraine headaches. Reasons for this disparity may include hormonal and genetic factors, as well as higher survival rates in woman. It is well known that women have a longer life expectancy than men, living almost 8% on average longer, however this also means more years lived with pain. This may explain why pain conditions associated with older people such as osteoarthritis are more common in women. In addition, pain after medical treatment can occur such as nerve pain related to chemotherapy or after surgery in patients with breast cancer.

It is important for females to not disregard pain and leave it untreated based on the perception that “it’s just a part of being a woman”. If you are experiencing prolonged pain, do not ignore it. See your trusted GP and they may refer you to an experienced pain specialist such as Dr Timothy Hucker from Northern Beaches Pain Management.

Dr Tim Hucker speaks to bowel cancer survivor Stephanie Bansemer-Brown about the importance of comprehensive pain management throughout bowel cancer treatment and survivorship.

Pain specialist, Dr Tim Hucker explains cancer-related pain can occur at any time and isn’t always due to cancer itself as a number of the treatments used in cancer care can cause pain - such as pain following surgery or peripheral nerve pain after chemotherapy.
