Plus is an industry leading day program, empowering people with disability who require higher levels of behaviour support, to make meaningful contributions through work activities. This is groundbreaking for the disability community in Australia. Yuumi has been open to trying new experiences at Plus. Our wonderful support workers have been introducing a variety of tasks and activities designed to engage Yuumi, encourage exploration and promote communication within the hub. These opportunities not only help Yuumi build skills and confidence, but also foster meaningful connections and enjoyment in her daily experiences at Plus.

At Plus, we know that true support goes beyond structured programs and skill development. Our approach is about creating opportunities for people with disability to thrive both personally and socially. While building practical skills is important, it is the shared, joyful moments that often have the most lasting impact, moments that foster self‑expression, boost confidence, and strengthen connections.

Taking time to enjoy music together with a support worker is one of those simple yet powerful experiences. It’s a space where trust grows, wellbeing is nurtured, and joy takes centre stage. Seeing Jocelyn so engaged reminds us that disability services are not just about outcomes, but about experiences that enrich daily life and allow each person’s individuality to shine.

Happy International Week of Deaf People! Did you know that there are over 70 million deaf people worldwide, using more than 300 different sign languages?

We're celebrating our Deaf and Hard of Hearing participants, families, and staff who bring so much value to our community. This year's theme, "No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights," highlights the importance of accessibility as a fundamental right, not a privilege.

Let's work together to amplify Deaf voices, promote inclusion, and create spaces where everyone can thrive. By learning and supporting Auslan and other sign languages, we can build a more inclusive world.

Human rights cannot be fully realised for Deaf people without the right to use, learn, and access sign language.

Sign language rights open the door to education, healthcare, justice, employment, and community life. Without them, everyday activities and essential services become barriers, undermining dignity and equality.

For Deaf people, sign language is more than communication. It is the key to freedom of expression, access to information, and full participation in society. Protecting sign language rights means protecting human rights.

Adrian, our resident entrepreneur, is kicking goals at Plus – achieving things that previously seemed out of reach, like a paid job at a mainstream workplace.

After starting and growing a thriving micro-business cleaning cars at Plus, Adrian and his parents expressed their interest in paid work opportunities for Adrian. His behaviour support lead, Yvette, was fully on board with the idea, seeing firsthand the determination and work ethic that Adrian demonstrated.

Now, Adrian is thriving in his new job at Star Car Wash and his parents are looking at what other work opportunities could be on the horizon. Head to our blog to read more about Adrian's story: https://plusdisability.com.au/2025/08/25/kicking-goals-how-adrian-turned-his-car-washing-passion-into-paid-work/

💛 Today is R U OK? Day - a national reminder to check in with the people around us and start meaningful conversations about mental health.

Asking “Are you OK?” isn’t always easy, but it can make a real difference. Life changes quickly - in a year, a month, or even a week - and the people we care about may be facing challenges we don’t see.

By checking in regularly, we show others they’re not alone, we build trust, and we make it easier for them to open up when things feel tough.

And while today shines a spotlight on the importance of these conversations, remember that it’s just as important to ask every day - because life happens daily.

So today, take a moment to ask the question that matters: “Are you OK?” - and be ready to really listen to the answer.

👉 Visit ruok.org.au for practical tips on how to have the conversation and support someone who might be struggling.

🌟 You’re Invited! 🌟

Join us at Avenue Newcastle for a free Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Info Session, presented by our sister enterprise Plus Clinical.

This informal session is all about PBS – what it is, why it matters, and how it can support people to thrive. We’ll cover:
✨ The core philosophy behind PBS
✨ What to expect from a practitioner & plan
✨ How NDIS funding works for behaviour support
✨ How to tell if PBS could be the right fit for you, your person, student or client

You’ll also meet Renee Scott, our Newcastle-based practitioner. With hands-on experience as a former Avenue Team Coordinator and expertise in behaviours of concern, Renee is ready to support with immediate capacity in the Newcastle area.

💡 This session is especially helpful for families, support coordinators and educators supporting someone transitioning from school this year or next – but everyone is welcome! You don’t need to be an Avenue participant to attend.

📅 Date: Thursday 11 September
🕓 Time: 4.00–5.00pm
📍 Location: Avenue, 1 Warrabrook Blvd, Warrabrook
☕ Light refreshments provided

👉 RSVP: https://cm.fightingchance.org.au/f/199

At our recent ceramics workshop, Michael B demonstrated impressive focus and craftsmanship, creating a beautiful ceramic vase.

At Plus, we believe that creative activities like these are powerful tools for building confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of achievement. That’s why we’ve launched a new monthly group creative program, designed to help participants develop new skills, boost their confidence, and connect with others - all within a fun and supportive environment.

A big thank you to Hayat for leading these inspiring sessions that empower everyone to explore their creativity and thrive.
