National Pain Week: Celebrating Our Specialist, Dr Tim Hucker

At Northern Beaches Hospital, we’re proud to spotlight one of our leading pain specialists, Dr Tim Hucker, during National Pain Week. As a specialist pain physician and founder of Northern Beaches Pain, Dr Hucker champions an integrated, holistic approach to pain management right here at Northern Beaches Hospital.

“Chronic back and neck pain is endemic everywhere, including on the Northern Beaches, along with joint arthritis in the knees and shoulders,” explains Dr Hucker. “But there’s no need to suffer in silence.”

Dr Tim Hucker and his team work in a collaborative way with multidisciplinary colleagues offering patient-centred treatments, from non-surgical interventions to long-term rehabilitation, “We build realistic, sustainable plans that help people take back control with personalised targeted pain relief.” He emphasises, “Pain relief should support a person’s ability to move and live fully, not mask symptoms. The goal is to rehabilitate, not medicate.”

At Northern Beaches Hospital and through Northern Beaches Pain, Dr Hucker and his team are dedicated to helping patients regain independence, reduce medication reliance, and return to vibrant living—providing expert support every step of the way.
Let’s break the silence on pain this National Pain Week. If you or a loved one are in need of a Pain Specialist, consider a referral from your GP to Dr. Tim Hucker.

Bowel Cancer Is Rising in Young Australians: A message from Dr Penelope De Lacavalerie during Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

Robotic colorectal surgeon and Bowel Cancer Australia spokesperson Dr Penelope De Lacavalerie is urging Australians to take action as bowel cancer cases continue to rise in younger people — with 1 in 9 new cases now occurring in those under 50.

“We need to stop thinking of bowel cancer as an ‘older person’s disease’,” she explains. “The risks are real for younger Australians too. That’s why early screening and awareness are crucial.”

Through her work with Bowel Cancer Australia, Dr De Lacavalerie was part of the national advocacy initiative that successfully led to the NHMRC’s approval to lower the bowel cancer screening age from 50 to 45.

“I’m incredibly proud to have contributed to this life-saving change,” she says. “Thousands more Australians can now access screening earlier — and that can mean the difference between life and death.”

Early detection saves lives. Don’t wait. Get checked.

“If something feels off, don’t ignore it — speak to your GP and ask about a colonoscopy. Bowel cancer doesn’t care how old you are.”

If you or a loved one are in need of a colorectal surgeon, consider asking your GP for a referral to Dr. Penelope De Lacavalerie

As it is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, it’s a vital time to focus on prevention, early detection, and the latest advances in treatment, right here on the Northern Beaches
Dr Justin Evans, Colorectal Surgeon at Northern Beaches Hospital, brings over 20 years of expertise in robotic and minimally invasive surgery, which is advancing patient outcomes by reducing recovery time and improving care.
“Robotics has transformed minimally invasive surgery offering incomparable access to the deep pelvis with improved cancer outcomes and reduced morbidity from surgery. This is rapidly becoming the preferred approach to major colorectal surgery.”
Dr Charlotte Kwik, Colorectal Surgeon, works collaboratively with Dr. Evans and emphasises the importance of screening, especially with bowel cancer often being symptomless in early stages.
“Bowel cancer is often asymptomatic, making screening essential. I recommend everyone over 45 complete faecal occult blood tests, and if you have symptoms or a family history, its crucial to discuss with your healthcare provider. When diagnosed at an earlier stage, the outcomes are significantly better.”
Together, Dr. Kwik & Dr. Evans champion rapid diagnosis and clear communication with GPs, ensuring patients receive timely, personalised care. Early detection saves lives.
Know the symptoms, ask questions, and prioritise your health.
If you or a loved one are seeking a colorectal surgeon, ask your GP about a referral to Dr Charlotte Kwik or Dr Justin Evans.

Spotlight on Community Engagement: Gary Wong, Senior Clinical Psychologist, presents at RSL Lifecare Narrabeen

We’re proud to highlight a wonderful example of community connection in action — this morning, Gary Wong was invited to present at RSL Lifecare Narrabeen to residents and facility managers on the mental health day programs offered at Northern Beaches Hospital. Joined by our business development manager Bec and GP Liaison officer Janice, the team discussed the importance of accessible mental health day programs for our mature aged community members.
Gary’s presentation was met with outstanding engagement, with residents commenting on how relevant and valuable the program is to their health and wellbeing.
A big thank you to our Northern Beaches team members and to the team at RSL Lifecare for welcoming us so openly.

We had the privilege of being part of this year’s RACS Annual Scientific Congress — connecting with peers and our valued NBH surgeons, engaging in meaningful conversations about the future of surgery, and exploring what matters most to surgeons in private practice within a hospital setting.
It was an excellent event, filled with new connections and the support of longstanding ones.
A heartfelt thank you to the surgeons of NBH who dropped by our stand — it was a pleasure to see you all!
We hope all attendees had an enjoyable and insightful few days.
