Have you ever injured your finger while playing sport?

A common thing we hear is that a physio or parent thought the joint was dislocated so they gave the finger a pull.

Unfortunately this patient had a fracture not a dislocation and the pulling of the finger likely resulted in the fracture worsening.

You should always see a physiotherapist trained in hand therapy or get an x-ray prior to the relocation.

Have you ever been told to change your running technique? 🏃‍♂️

Research suggests both elite and social runners should never change their running technique.

For example, a heel runner will likely place more stress through the knee and shins. If this runner changed their technique to toe running, they are only shifting the forces elsewhere.

Instead of adjusting the technique, build the tissues that are being overloaded. The heel runner should build up their quadriceps, and adjust their training load. If this fails, we would suggest a different shoe type depending on their foot posture.

If you have any running questions feel free to reach out to our Physiotherapists

How do you treat a concussion in a child? 🧠

A concussion is a type of mild traumatic brain injury. It happens when a blow to the head or an injury makes the head move back and fourth with a lot of force. This causes chemical changes in the brain and damage to brain cells.

See our Physiotherapists to ensure the brain makes a full recovery! Swipe left to see how we manage our concussion injuries.

Do you stretch before you run?

There is some great evidence that greater flexibility actually makes you less efficient. Running well is about being a stiff spring. Stiffness in your tendons allows you to store and return more energy with each stride.

Have you ever heard of a mallet finger deformity?

This is one of the most common injuries we see at SIM Physio and WiSE Emergency Clinic.

A bony mallet finger injury occurs when the end of the finger is forced downwards with excessive pressure. This results in the extensor tendon rupturing and in some cases, taking a piece of bone with the tendon.

Most mallet fingers are managed non-surgically in a specific splint for 6 weeks to allow the fracture heal and ensue there is no long-term deformity.

Know someone who used a brace for their scoliosis?

Research suggests that bracing for scoliosis is effective.

Bracing is only recommended on patients who’s curvature is >25 degrees and are going through their major growth spurt. Bracing can reduce the curvature and reduce the risk of surgery.

Our physiotherapists can assess your scoliosis and refer for an EOS scan. This is a bulk billed scan that has less radiation than an x-ray. The scan will determine your exact curvature angle.
