Play is one of the most important parts of a child’s life. Among the many forms of play in early childhood, pretend play stands out as a critical building block for creativity, communication, social skills, and emotional growth.

In our new blog, we break down what milestones you can expect to see in your child.

As OTs, we love proprioceptive activities. And so should you!

Proprioception is our body’s “sixth” sense. It’s how we know where our limbs are in space and feel pressure on our skin. Sometimes when child are dysregulated, this input is frazzled.

Heavy work activities are a brilliant way to reset the nervous system using proprioceptive inputs.

Save this for the next time you need a prop activity idea!

If you want to learn more about proprioception and it’s impact on little bodies, head to My OT Toolkit!

Sydney is officially getting our first taste of winter! And, of course, the colder weather brings with it an increased risk of illness.

As the weather cools down, we tend to spend more time indoors, routines shift, and — unfortunately — colds and flu start making their way through homes, schools, and health clinics.

We’ve put together a list of simple at-home strategies you can implement to help boost your child’s immune system over the cooler months. We’ll be implementing these, and so should you!

At OTHC, our OTs also get a yearly flu shot to give our immune systems to best chance to avoid illness and protect your children this winter.

Wednesday's speech announced some of the most significant changes the NDIS has seen in quite a few years. And we know that some of what was said sounds overwhelming and unsettling.

We are here to reassure our parents and families that your child will continue to receive the highest-quality support from our team.

We've provided a quick recap of the main changes coming to the Scheme and a few areas that we still don't have tangible information for.

We are here for you.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the OTHC team or your OT.

The Curve of Forgetting is a visual representation of the way humans learn and retain information. Created back in the 1880’s, it is still a brilliant way of articulating why repetition of skills and ideas helps it stick in our minds.

If you’re working on a skill with your child and they seem to be struggling to grasp it, remember this model. Constant practice and reminders will slowly but surely increase their knowledge and capacity.

Why do we cook and bake during OT sessions? 🧁🍕

OTs Jemma and Laila explain the many different skills cooking works on including and plenty more!

It can be really helpful to work on these skills at home when you’re making dinner or even school lunches. Try get them involved in reading recipes, stirring and measuring.
