All about stretch and sweep -
Stretch and sweep (sometimes called a “membrane sweep”) is used to help start labour and reduce the need for an induction.
It can be offered to women who are close to, or past their due date.
Your Midwife or Doctor will do a vaginal examination – they will insert their finger into the opening of the cervix and gently stretch it and sweep it around the inside of the opening to separate your membranes (the sac of amniotic fluid around the baby) from the cervix.
Sweeping of the membranes releases a hormone called prostaglandin which helps labour begin.
A stretch and sweep is safe. However, some women describe it as uncomfortable, but it may help stimulate your labour within a couple of days. It is certainly worth trying as an easy step before induction of labour.
