The Vagus Nerve System acts to counterbalance the fight or flight system and can trigger a relaxation response in our body. When your sympathetic nervous system is under prolonged activation from real or imagined stress (the brain doesn’t know the difference!) every system in your body is affected from your cardiovascular and digestive system, emotional dysregulation, poor mood and hormonal function, sleep and focus leaving you feeling inflamed, wired and tired, on edge and cranky.
Activating your Vagal nerve and parasympathetic response is key to calming down an over active and stressed out system, for adults and children alike.
Unlike the sympathetic nervous system, which governs the fight, flight and freeze response, the parasympathetic nervous system controls resting heart rate, respiration and digestion. It’s the key to unlocking the relaxation response. In recent years, researchers discovered that the vagus nerve also puts the brakes on inflammation, a key player in the onset of nearly all chronic diseases, including those that affect cognition.
