Thankyou Thankyou THANKYOU to everyone who had a go at guessing what little Pico ingested.

We had so many people have a go, we'll have to see if we can do this again sometime :-) Thanks to Emergency Vet Dr Vickie Saye for the idea... such a tease!

Well as you can see it's a PIPE CLEANER! and the best (& only) correct answer was given by Daniela Julie who said it was one of those 'Craft Pipe Cleaners'. Daniela also said it was green but in fact it was pink - the colour several people mentioned.

So while Pipe cleaners are great fun for cats, probably best they stay on the outside!

BTW Pico was taken care of by Dr Ryan Leliard, Surgeon was Dr Vickie Saye ably helped by our Vet Nurses Dani, Meg and Anna.

We hope Pico is going to stay safe this Christmas :-)

*** CAN YOU GUESS WHAT PICO ATE?... & what colour?
Poor little Pico... he was brought in to us here at ARH Canberra because he'd been vomiting at home but his owners weren't sure why. We radiographed him (x-ray) but as he'd stopped vomiting he went back home to see if he could pass whatever it was on his own.

Unfortunately Pico had to be rushed back in to our Emergency Department later in the day vomiting again and taken straight to surgery.

So... our question for you is... from this radiograph can YOU tell us what you think Pico ate and what colour?

Vets, vet nurses & students please refrain from giving out the answer if you already know ok? :-)

We'll have an actual photo to answer this question in the next day or so.

*** PARALYSIS TICK WARNING ***
plus scroll down for a lovely 'thankyou' note from Thor's mum

Well... Lucky Thor! The symptoms immediately after being bitten by a paralysis tick are not always obvious. But over a few hours things start to go downhill pretty fast. Wobbly legs, change in a dog's bark... and for this little cutie severe respiratory distress - basically finding it very difficult to breathe!

Within an hour of being rushed to the ARH Emergency Centre here in Fyshwick, Thor was on to a ventilator. This allowed our emergency team to help him breathe which ultimately saved his life!

Thor was eventually able to be weaned off the ventilator after about 8hrs but still needed another 5 days in hospital.

*** TICK PREVENTATIVES ***
And while Thor was lucky - this time - it's a good reminder for all Canberra pet lovers that if you visit the coast in particular (and even in some areas locally!), make sure you have some sort of tick preventative. Just ask your own vet for the best one for your pet!

*** THANKYOU NOTE FROM THOR's MUM STRUTHI ***
We cannot thank you enough for saving our fur baby. Thor is recovering very well. Two weeks ago we took our French bulldog to ARH after we noticed him struggling to walk.

Upon arriving at the hospital they immediately took him for a thorough check up. Vikki one of the amazing surgeons there was upfront and informed us that they found a tick and Thor is in a critical condition.

From that moment on everyone at ARH did everything they could to help Thor recover. We were constantly updated about his progress.

They encouraged us to visit Thor anytime we wanted to see him and never put any restrictions. It was very comforting to talk to you and given you are always busy, you still always made sure to explain everything without any time restrictions.

Thor was in the hospital for five days and is making full recovery today only because of your experience, expertise and knowledge.

Thank you so much Vickie, Darcy, John and all the amazing staff of ARH. You are all doing such an amazing job.

HEY MUM... LOOK WHAT WE FOUND!...

This family of 3 staffies: father, mother and daughter were found together with a chomped up snake. Seems that only dad was bitten and best of all it was only a sub lethal dose - very lucky!

Emergency Vet Dr Vickie Saye said "the owners drove all the way from Bredbo with the snake which was great because it allowed us to identify it quickly and to work out the best test to see if they had been envenomated. Bringing the snake really helped us a lot!"

Dr Vickie also noted that this snake - an Eastern Brown - was very very common in Canberra but also warned people to be VERY careful trying to pick up snakes, and recommends poking them into a bucket with a stick and ONLY if they're sure it's dead.

It's worth noting that there is plenty of colour and stripe variation in snakes, in particular the Eastern Brown, and they can usually only be identified properly based on checking the scales, preferably around the eye.

Of course we can't forget our hard working Vet nurses who assisted Dr Vickie - thanks to ARH Emergency Vet Nurses Ali, Krystal & Pauline - Great work everyone!

We love hearing from you! - This beautiful note from Shannon about her much loved dog Dexter.

"I cannot speak more highly of ARH. Two weeks ago our dog began to have symptoms of extreme pain and left foot lameness. We were referred to ARH after our vet performed x-rays with no significant findings and pain relief was becoming less effective.

When we arrived all the staff were wonderful and the vet we saw was nothing less than outstanding. He was so kind, so informative and so compassionate.

Unfortunately it was not a good outcome for our puppy but all the staff were wonderful throughout the difficult time and just today we received a beautiful card and present from ARH to help us remember our beautiful dog.

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and kindness. We could not have placed our dog in better hands and we find comfort knowing he was surrounded by such kind, special people when he was with you."

Thanks Shannon and of course our thoughts are with you and your family - Clearly Dexter was a much loved member of the family
