changed from one of my most disliked postures to one of my favourite postures when Simon Borg-Olivier () explained in a workshop many years ago that this posture should have side flexion in the spine. This changed everything!⠀

This variation with my bottom hand reaching towards my back foot ensures you don't lean on your leg. And I lengthen the upper shoulder away from the upper hip to create length while lifting the ribs and waist of the lower side (my right side in this image) away from the thigh to encourage more side flexion.⠀

This posture gives length and strength down the side of the body creating lateral stability which is so important as we age to help prevent falls.

Fly like an eagle with me in class this week as we explore . As well as being a tricky balance, it's a great stretch for the outer hip and the upper back between the shoulder blades.

Always modify the posture to suit your body, not modify your body to suit the posture. With a broken leg I'm having to do a lot of that right now!

Triangmukhaikapada paschimottanasana or three point forward bend internally rotates the hip of the bent leg and can be problematic for the knee in some people, especially if the hip is tight. Make sure the muscles around the knee are engaged by pressing the foot and shin into the floor.

If the knee still isn't happy then try sitting on a folded blanket to lift up the pelvis reducing the angle at the knee. If your knee still isn't happy then this pose isn't for you right now. Never be afraid to adjust the pose for your body rather than conforming your body to a pose that isn't for you.

In my classes I encourage you to listen to your body and honour what it is telling you.

My body is telling me it needs a little more healing time, so Monday and Tuesday this week is cancelled, Annie is teaching Thursday for me and I'll be back on the mat with you from Saturday but in the studio for the next few weeks until I can drive again. Regular class schedule resumes from next week with Saturdays in the studio.

It's fun to play around with shapes and explore different variations in a posture; in this instance it is shoulderstand. I always encourage my students to FEEL into their body, and to be CURIOUS rather than judgemental. Practice AHIMSA (non-harming), not only in how you move in your practice, but also in your thoughts about yourself.

Join me in class this week before I jet off to NZ on Sunday to go skiing!

No bookings required in the hall on Saturday or just message me if you'd like to jump into a studio class.

If you prefer a much easier practice, then join us for Mindful Chi Flow on Monday nights. No push-ups, no up dogs or down dogs. Just a moving meditation.

Winter ❄️ It's a time to go inwards and this variation of (turtle pose) helps to do just that. With new moon this Friday we'll be taking some time for soothing postures and self reflection.

I love this variation of shoulder stand against the wall because you can vary how high you want to roll up, or you can make it a dynamic movement and continue to roll up and down. It's a great way to feel into your spine and even give yourself a self massage!

Welcome to TERM 3 !

Let me help you to bring more BALANCE into your life with the therapeutic practice of yoga. This term we will be exploring the water element in TCM and the bladder and kidney meridians. The bladder meridian travels down the back of the body, so we'll be working at strengthening our back body over the next few weeks.

If you are wanting to bring more freedom of movement to your body and more relaxation to your mind then why not try my Mindful Chi Flow class on Monday nights? There's just a few spaces remaining.

No bookings required for Saturday mornings in the the hall.

Join me on the mat this week for more strengthening of the back body. This one leg supported bridge posture works the body asymmetrically, strengthening one side at a time.

The goal with this one is the keep the pelvis as level as possible. If lifting your leg straight up is too strong start by lifting just your heel and then maybe your whole foot but keep the knee bent. If that feels ok then you might like to try to straighten the leg as in this image.

The most important thing is to listen to your own body and only go as far as your body is safe to go.
