The humble triangle pose is one of my favourite postures. I love the stretch it gives to the inner thigh and the strengthening of the side body.⠀

To stop yourself from sagging in trikonasana, gently squeeze your armpit to your hip on the upper side (my left side in this image). Last week's unsupported half moon pose is a perfect warm up for trikonasana to bring awareness to this engagement.⠀

I've heard teachers instruct to pull the top hip back as if your pelvis is flat against the wall behind you, but this can jam the SIJ (sacroilliac joint). It's safer to let the top hip roll forward a little to keep the back of the pelvis broad and then rotate the navel and chest upwards towards the sky. Which means there is a slight spinal twist in triangle pose. 💫⠀

Over the coming weeks we'll be looking at postures that bring strength and stability to the side body. This week we are exploring niralamba ardha chandrasana or unsupported half moon.⠀

This is a much more accessible posture than the regular half moon pose (ardha chandrasana) because it doesn't require as much hip or hamstring flexibility.⠀

By squeezing the armpit to hip on the upper side (my left side in this pic) it allows the lower side (my right side here) to lengthen and open. It also brings an awareness to engaging the side body ready for postures like trikonasana (triangle) and the regular half moon pose (ardha chandrasana) which can be easy to "fall" into without proper engagement.⠀

Thanks to Simon Borg-Olivier for showing me this posture many years ago and for transforming my practice and my teaching with what I like to call "intelligent yoga".

I'm feeling strong like a warrior, being given the green light to walk again by the orthopedic surgeon! 🎉

I'll need to modify my warrior posture (and other postures!) for the next few weeks while I gain more functionality of my ankle and knee, but this is applying the first yama in yoga - AHIMSA (non-harming).

I'd love you to join me in class this week, where you are encouraged to listen to your body and modify the posture whenever needed.

Saturdays are still in the studio for now, so message me if you'd like to join any class this week.

It's school holidays but all classes are on as normal so let me know if you'd like to jump into a studio class.

We'll be exploring a few more gall bladder meridian stretches, including this one: or pigeon pose which is a deep stretch in the butt and especially the piriformis. There are a few ways to stretch the piriformis which I'll be demonstrating in class if this posture isn't suitable for you.

Always practise with ahimsa (non-violence) so make sure you modify the posture if it isn't suitable for your body to something that is suitable.

Hands up if you are ready for spring?! Meeeeee!

Springtime in TCM is governed by the Wood element, which is our gall bladder and liver meridians. As a young sapling sprouts out of the ground and grows upwards towards the light, it needs to be flexible to manoeuvre around anything blocking it's path, otherwise it can't grow. Likewise, as people if we are not flexible in the mind, our emotional growth can be thwarted leading to anger and frustration. Learning to "go with the flow" can be liberating and lead to growth.

Our gall bladder meridian gives stability and flexibility to our side body and we'll be exploring this theme over the coming weeks.

changed from one of my most disliked postures to one of my favourite postures when Simon Borg-Olivier () explained in a workshop many years ago that this posture should have side flexion in the spine. This changed everything!⠀

This variation with my bottom hand reaching towards my back foot ensures you don't lean on your leg. And I lengthen the upper shoulder away from the upper hip to create length while lifting the ribs and waist of the lower side (my right side in this image) away from the thigh to encourage more side flexion.⠀

This posture gives length and strength down the side of the body creating lateral stability which is so important as we age to help prevent falls.

Fly like an eagle with me in class this week as we explore . As well as being a tricky balance, it's a great stretch for the outer hip and the upper back between the shoulder blades.

Always modify the posture to suit your body, not modify your body to suit the posture. With a broken leg I'm having to do a lot of that right now!

Triangmukhaikapada paschimottanasana or three point forward bend internally rotates the hip of the bent leg and can be problematic for the knee in some people, especially if the hip is tight. Make sure the muscles around the knee are engaged by pressing the foot and shin into the floor.

If the knee still isn't happy then try sitting on a folded blanket to lift up the pelvis reducing the angle at the knee. If your knee still isn't happy then this pose isn't for you right now. Never be afraid to adjust the pose for your body rather than conforming your body to a pose that isn't for you.

In my classes I encourage you to listen to your body and honour what it is telling you.

My body is telling me it needs a little more healing time, so Monday and Tuesday this week is cancelled, Annie is teaching Thursday for me and I'll be back on the mat with you from Saturday but in the studio for the next few weeks until I can drive again. Regular class schedule resumes from next week with Saturdays in the studio.
