After receiving a diagnosis, it can be easy to get lost in internet searches and trying to figure out the reliable from less reliable sources of information. We always suggest our patients start with the most reputable sources such as BCNA. BCNA provides resources and information that can support patients at any point in their journey. As always, call your specialist if you have questions about your care.

BCNA works to ensure that all Australians who are affected by breast cancer receive the very best care, treatment and support.

It is so important for people to understand their breast cancer risk. Talk to your GP about factors that may contribute to a higher risk of breast cancer. If specialist review is recommended, there are options for care either as a private or public patient. The most important thing is to start the conversation.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows that skin cancer is Australia’s most common type of cancer.

At least 2 in 3 Aussies will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime despite it being almost entirely preventable with good sun protection.

Supporting effective skin cancer prevention strategies is so important - we're pleased to see this as a priority in the Victorian Cancer Plan.

Great graphic to help you know what to look for on your skin.

Skin cancer can appear as an existing spot that has changed in colour, size or shape or a new or unusual looking spot, including a lump or sore which doesn’t heal or may bleed.

Check your skin regularly and if you notice any changes, see your GP as soon as possible.

Often, it’s nothing to worry about. But if it is skin cancer – the sooner it’s found, the easier it is to treat.

Early identification of lymphoedema can improve outcomes for patients. If you are concerned about lymphoedema, call the rooms to discuss seeing a lymphoedema therapist.

Today is World Lymphoedema Day.

Melanoma Patients Australia proudly supports Lymphoedema Awareness Month and the Lymphoedema Association Australia’s Shine a Light on Lymphedema campaign.

Did you know that the incidence of Lymphoedema can be as high as 29% in patients with melanoma? Secondary lymphoedema is the most common type developing following damage to the lymphatic system. The damage may occur as a result of some cancer treatments including the removal of lymph nodes, following radiotherapy to lymph node groups or with the progression of malignant disease. The onset of lymphoedema may be at any time. It may occur within months of the damage or it may appear years later.

⚠️ Health Alert: Heat Health Warning for today ☀️

The forecast heatwave conditions may cause health impacts in the community.

Heatwaves can affect anyone. Older people, people with a pre-existing medical condition, pregnant women and young children and babies are most at risk.

Remember to check in on any neighbours, family and friends who may be at risk.

How to survive the heat:
• Drink plenty of water. Always take a bottle with you.
• Hot cars kill. Never leave kids, adults or pets in cars. The temperature inside a parked car can double within minutes.
• Keep cool. Seek out air-conditioned buildings, draw your blinds, use a fan, take cool showers and dress in light and loose clothing made from natural fabrics.
• Plan ahead. Schedule activities in the coolest part of the day and avoid exercising in the heat. If you must go out, wear a hat and sunscreen and take a bottle of water with you.
• Check-in on others. Look after those most at risk in the heat – your neighbour living alone, older people, children and babies, people with a medical condition and don’t forget your pets.
• Call NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 606 024 or see your doctor if you are unwell.
• In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).

A timely reminder as we come into summer. Take care out there!!

It is National Skin Cancer Action Week. It is a significant opportunity to highlight the importance of sun safety and early detection.

It is the perfect time to take action to protect yourself from the sun this summer.

* Buy a wide-brimmed hat and wear it whenever you leave the house.
* Check the expiration date on your sunscreen - yes, they expire.
* Buy SPF50+ broad spectrum - and use it every day, multiple times a day.
* Be a role model to the younger generation - Slip Slop Slap Seek Slide.
* Perform a self-skin check and follow up with your GP if you find anything out of the ordinary.

A reminder to check the UV levels and take precautions when outdoors.

A reminder to check the UV levels and take precautions when outdoors.

Know the facts. Most melanomas are caused by prolonged and repeated exposure to UV radiation in sunlight.
