It’s almost here! 🧬

Our Day of Immunology Seminar 2026 is just around the corner, and we’d love for you to join us. Our theme this year is: Signals, Cells and Sneezes: Decoding Immune Responses.

Ever wondered how your body knows how to respond to infection or why something as simple as a sneeze is part of a much bigger immune story? Our researchers Poshmaal Dhar and Rachel Morgan will be sharing insights into how immune responses work, from cellular signals to real-world health impacts.

World Malaria Day 🦟 2026 at CIIDIR brought together researchers across different areas to share insights into one of the world’s most complex and evolving global health challenges.

Aligned with this year’s theme, “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must”, our speakers reflected on global progress in malaria control, as well as the more recent slowdown and resurgence in some regions; highlighting the need for new tools and approaches to keep progress on track.

Our keynote speaker, Natalie Counihan, explored the growing challenge of drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum, particularly resistance to artemisinin-based therapies and highlighting how changes in parasite biology can reduce treatment effectiveness, and the potential for novel approaches including compounds derived from broccoli sprouts to help restore drug sensitivity.

We also got to hear amazing research from:
➙Win Htike on health system readiness for malaria elimination in the Greater Mekong Subregion
➙Sonakshi Madan on molecular epidemiology and sources of resurgent Plasmodium falciparum infection
➙Michaela Grima on parasite-driven mechanisms of disease pathogenesis
➙Katelyn Stanhope on the implications of genetic diversity for malaria vaccine development

The seminar highlighted how interconnected malaria research is and why why collaborative approaches are so important in moving towards elimination.

We are so grateful to all our speakers and everyone who joined us for this special seminar.

Each year, the Day of Immunology is a chance to recognise the science that works quietly in the background to keep us healthy every day. At CIIDIR, we’re happy to once again partner with the Australian and New Zealand Society for Immunology - ASI to highlight the role immunology plays in addressing global health challenges, from infectious diseases to broader immune-related conditions.

Our annual seminar on May 5th will bring together CIIDIR researchers to share insights into the work happening across the institute, and how this research is contributing to improved health outcomes both locally and globally.

Great to see our partners at Australian Centre of Research Excellence in Malaria Elimination welcome Edwin Sutanto as a new PhD student from Menzies School of Health Research. 👏

Edwin’s research focuses on investigating drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum in Papua, Indonesia using advanced molecular approaches to better understand how parasite populations are evolving over time and how resistance spreads. His work will also help uncover patterns of infection in previously understudied regions, contributing to more effective malaria control strategies.

A key part of this research includes collaboration with Professor Alyssa Barry at CIIDIR, supporting cross-border malaria surveillance between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Looking forward to seeing the impact of Edwin’s research!

Malaria is preventable and treatable, yet it still impacts millions of lives every year. In 2024, there were 282 million cases and 610,000 deaths globally, with young children most at risk World Health Organization (WHO)

At CIIDIR, our researchers are working to change this by researching on advancing vaccines, treatments, and prevention strategies to help drive us closer to a malaria-free future.

This World Malaria Day, we’re bringing our research community together and you’re invited at our World Malaria Day Research Seminar

📅 Tuesday, 21 April | 10:00am
📍 HERB Lecture Theatre + Online (Zoom)

Come hear from our researchers on everything from drug resistance and vaccine development to genomic surveillance and implementation research.

Today we join the global community in recognising World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day and the shared call to unite efforts, take action and work towards eliminating NTDs.

Neglected tropical diseases continue to impact millions of people worldwide, particularly in vulnerable communities, contributing to health inequities and long-term social and economic challenges.

At CIIDIR, our research across infectious disease, epidemiology and population health supports greater understanding, prevention and control of infectious diseases. Through collaboration and evidence-based research, we contribute to improved diagnostics, surveillance and strategies that support long-term disease elimination.
