Masking is something many neurodivergent people do without even realising it.

It’s the act of hiding traits, copying others, or pushing through discomfort, all to avoid standing out.

For some, it’s a way to stay safe. For others, it’s the only way they’ve ever known how to move through the world.

But masking comes at a cost. It’s emotionally exhausting. It can lead to burnout, anxiety, even disconnection from self.

You don’t have to earn belonging by performing.
You are already enough.
Unmasking is possible, and you don’t have to do it alone.

💛 Soft reminder: Everyone unmasks in their own way, at their own pace.

There’s no right or wrong here, only what feels true for you.

The words we use shape the way we think, feel, and connect with others, especially in the disability and neurodivergent communities.

One way we can all make a difference is by using Person-First Language, a way of speaking that puts the person before their diagnosis or disability.

For example, instead of saying “a disabled person”, try:
👉 “a person with a disability”
👉 “a person who uses a wheelchair”
👉 “a person living with a mental health condition”

Why does it matter?
Because language is powerful. By placing the person first, we remind ourselves and others that a diagnosis is just one part of someone’s story, it doesn’t define their identity, strengths, or potential.

We also recognise that some people (especially in communities like Autism and Deaf culture) may prefer identity-first language, and that’s absolutely valid.

When in doubt, ask!

Everyone deserves the respect of being referred to in the way that feels right for them.

Let’s all take a step toward a more respectful, inclusive world, one word at a time.
