⚠️ Trigger Warning: The following photos include surgical content (blood and internal organs). Please view only if you are comfortable with medical imagery.
Earlier this week, Rigby, a gorgeous 6-year-old GSP, was rushed to an emergency clinic in the early hours of the morning after a sudden onset of vomiting, diarrhoea, and unsettled behaviour.
Further diagnostic imaging revealed a significant amount of gas buildup caused by compacted sand within his gastrointestinal tract.
Because sand can quickly harden and create a dangerous obstruction, Rigby required an exploratory laparotomy to safely remove the material and relieve the pressure.
We’re very happy to report that the surgery went smoothly, and Rigby is now recovering well with supportive care, pain relief, and lots of rest 🐾💙
As summer approaches, we encourage pet owners to monitor dogs closely at the beach, especially those who love to fetch or dig. Always reach out to your vet if you notice vomiting, lethargy, or abdominal discomfort.
