From 6-12 May, we recognise and celebrate National Nurses Week and the incredible contribution nurses make every day.

Nurses are often the first point of care and a constant source of support, guidance and reassurance for patients.

At Kardinia Health, our nursing team plays a vital role in supporting patients across every stage of their healthcare journey. With a team of nine nurses, each bringing diverse skills and experience, they take the time to get to know our patients and their families, helping deliver care that is both personalised and practical.

From wound care, immunisations, and ECGs to assisting with minor procedures and managing chronic diseases, their work is hands-on, detailed, and essential to keeping our community well.

They also support important preventative care, including health assessments, care plans, and women’s health clinics, helping patients stay proactive about their health.

We’re proud to work alongside such a dedicated and compassionate team who make a meaningful difference to our patients and community every day 💙

Heart Week: 4th - 10th May 🫀

This week is a reminder to check in on your heart health.

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Australia, and often, the early signs can go unnoticed. The good news is that small, consistent steps can make a meaningful difference.

There are six key areas that play an important role in reducing your risk:
❤️ Blood pressure
🩺 Cholesterol
🧪 Blood sugar levels
🚭 Smoking status
🏃 Physical activity
🥗 Nutrition

Many of these can be managed with the right support and early intervention.

A simple heart health check with your GP can help you better understand your risk and what steps may be right for you.

If it’s been a while since your last check, this week is a good opportunity to start that conversation with your GP at Kardinia Health.

💼 Workplace health is about more than physical safety.

Today is World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which highlights the importance of the psychosocial work environment. This includes how work is designed, organised and managed, as well as the everyday experiences that shape how people feel at work.

Factors such as workload, working hours, role clarity, autonomy, support, and fair processes all contribute to wellbeing. When these are not well managed, they can become psychosocial hazards that impact both health and performance.

Creating a healthy workplace means recognising these risks early and taking a proactive approach to supporting staff wellbeing.

At Kardinia Health, we recognise that both physical and mental well-being are important parts of overall health.

What does it mean to age well?

Healthspan refers to the years of life spent in good health. While we cannot stop ageing, there are practical steps we can take to stay healthier for longer.

Regular check-ups, staying active, supporting your mental wellbeing, and addressing both women's health and men's health needs can all make a meaningful difference over time.

Our latest blog explores four simple ways to start ageing healthier.

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition that causes swelling, most commonly in the arms or legs. It is often underdiagnosed, which can delay the care and support people need.

Early detection and treatment can help reduce swelling, improve comfort, and support better long-term outcomes.

Signs may include swelling, a feeling of heaviness or tightness, reduced movement, or recurring skin infections.

At Kardinia Health, physiotherapist Jacqueline Bate is an ALA accredited lymphoedema therapist who supports patients with the diagnosis and management of lymphoedema, as well as lipoedema and swelling related to venous insufficiency.

Jacqueline focuses on early intervention, using advanced tools such as bio-impedance spectroscopy to detect even small changes in tissue swelling. She also provides guidance on compression therapy, which is considered a gold standard approach to managing lymphoedema.

If you have noticed any changes or would like support, our team is here to help you take the next step in your care.

What does a primary care doctor actually do?

Your primary care doctor, also known as a GP, is often your first point of contact when it comes to your health.

They support you with everyday medical care, from diagnosing common illnesses to providing preventative care, managing ongoing conditions, and guiding you to the right specialist when needed.

Seeing the same GP over time also helps you stay on top of important health checks and vaccinations, including your annual flu shot.

If you would like to better understand how a GP supports your health at every stage of life, you can read our latest blog on the Kardinia Health website.

If you are due for a check-up or would like to book a flu shot, our team at Kardinia Health is here to support you with personalised care.
