Wathaurong Aboriginal Co Op

Wathaurong Aboriginal Co Op We are here to support and politically advocate for the Aboriginal community in the Geelong and wider region.

We meet the needs of our community by providing culturally appropriate, quality services and programs which promote sustainable economic growth, political stability, health and well-being and environmental care that is respectful of Aboriginal culture. The Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative acknowledges and accepts its responsibilities to the community in providing increased opportunities for social and economic advancement. We aim to have the Co-operative function in a way that will enable us to build and strengthen the social, cultural, economic, environmental and spiritual foundations of our community. We advocate for our community on issues which affect their lives and operate in a way that ensures the rights of our people are upheld. We work toward broader collaboration and maintaining partnerships with external stakeholders to ensure informed policy, program directions and service access and responsiveness. We represent community needs and interests in all of our dealings; this is the pure essence of community control.

There has been a lot happening on our Morgan Street Dreaming Project and we are pleased to provide this update for our Community. We have now finalised the purchase of land at 43 The Boulevard (known as the “triangle site”) from the City of Greater Geelong. This site will be the location of our new carpark for the new facility.

While we are still awaiting outcomes of funding applications to be able to move forward with the main construction, our current funding allows us to begin some early works on the triangle site. You may notice some temporary fencing going up around the Co-op site from Friday 21st November in preparation for this work. The early works on the triangle site will include removal and remediation of any contaminated soil in the area, so this temporary fencing is to ensure that we can keep our community safe while these works take place.

Once the early works have been completed and the contamination has been remediated, we will be arranging a celebration event for community to say farewell to the Morgan Street building before we begin the demolition and construction. This event will be held in early 2026, with a date still to be confirmed.

Wathaurong’s Karroong Kanyool Youth Hub is a home base where young Aboriginal people can stay strong and connected to culture. With Elders and mentors guiding yarning circles, art, dance and on-Country activities, the hub strengthens identity, pride and belonging. Culture is wrapped around practical supports, safe after-school hangouts, wellbeing check-ins, study help, and pathways to sport, training and jobs, so our young people feel seen, supported and deadly. Above all, it’s a healing space to build confidence, friendships and leadership while walking strong on Wadda Wurrung Country.

Did you know that November is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month?

Today we're talking about checking in on our Dads' Mental Health!

Being a new dad can be one of the biggest changes in life — full of love, pride, and joy, but also pressure, worry, and tired days. As your kids get older, there can be different kinds of worries and pressure.

For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, it can feel hard to talk about what’s going on inside.

But having a yarn, reaching out, or just letting someone know you’re struggling — that’s a strong move. Mental health affects all of us. It’s okay to ask for help, to take a break, and to lean on your brothers, uncles, Elders, and mates.

Let’s keep the conversations going and remind all dads they’re not alone. 💬👣

Have you heard of "SMS4DeadlyDads"?

SMS4DeadlyDads sends short texts with tips, info and links to your phone just when you and your baby need it.

If you identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you’re sent a unique set of messages designed especially for First Nations dads.

The messages can help dads to connect with their Bub, help support mum, and look after themselves as well.

You can sign up online by entering your mobile number and your baby’s due or actual date of birth.

It’s FREE – and dads from all around Australia can join up
