HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
Mr Potato head is truly symbolic of end of term feels. One of my clients created him this week and said he was ‘fast speed’ (from the Alert program Speedo concept). He has captured this beautifully.
Enjoy a relaxing break with your families x.

Last week I ran the first of a series of sessions for parents of autistic teen girls. It was so lovely for my families to connect with each other and share the joys and challenges of their journey so far.

This week I had a great session with a new 15 year-old client who has some motor skills related goals. His challenges with motor planning mean that many every day tasks can be quite challenging for him. One goal that he wanted to work on was cutting with scissors. In the picture the cut on the right hand side was his first attempt at cutting through the paper - you can see jagged edges along the cut. Using my OT brain and analytical skills I worked out why this was occurring and with a small tweak he was then able to cut through the paper - you can see on the left. It was incredible how much smoother and straighter this cut was with just a simple verbal prompt regarding how he was opening and closing the scissors. The sheer joy on his face was so heartwarming to see and reinforced how our OT training provides us with great skills to analyse a task to help with great outcomes. Let’s say this client is happy to come back again and work on some other skills he finds challenging. ✂️

Many of my clients like things to be ordered to help them regulate and calm. At the end of a busy day at school, one of my clients loved spending time sorting these water beads. They first sorted by individual colour, then two colours mixed together. She then laid out the beads in these sections in the picture. Not only did the cool tactile feeling of the water beads provide some regulating sensory import., but the process of sorting and organising helped to clear their mind. It also allowed some gentle conversation and questions to be explored. Do you or your child have something that you like sorting as a regulating tool? Sorting Lego or untangling things are other examples.
