CALCIUM IS GOOD FOR BONES BUT YOU ALSO NEED VITAMIN D3 AND K2 at the same time. These vitamins are called co-factors for calcium. They help the calcium from your food get into your bones, not your arteries. Vitamin K2 is not always easy to come across. A rich source is the fermented food NATTO, available from Asian Foods in Belmont, just outside Geelong city. One of the white packages in the picture should last you a week, or even longer if you eat Natto raw at the same time as you eat peas and beans. This is because it is a fermented food that can then go on working, like yoghurt does. The texture is a bit odd and takes getting used to. The good news is, that if you don't like it raw you can cook it mixed with other food without losing the vitamin K2. Best however is to slip a small amount into a stir fry at the last minute. Some people need it every day, others not as often, it is an individual tendency that seems to run in families.

DANDELIONS are useful in more than one way. The leaves are made up into kidney tonics and the roots into liver tonics. You can also use them yourself at home, adding a few green leaves finely chopped into salads or herbal tea, or blending the leaves into a smoothie. For liver health use the root. You will need to get nice sized roots preferably before the plant flowers, scrub and finely slice to add to soup. And if you can find enough roots, scrub, dry and grind them into a powder for a pleasant-tasting drink that is used as a coffee substitute. The best sized roots grow under fruit trees or in your vegetable garden. Strangely, dandelions have an affinity for humans! They grow in very odd places in cities and gardens, even cracks in pavements, and their seeds blow far in the wind. Yet you may find them growing all around buildings such as farmhouses but not out in the paddocks - a dandelion mystery!

SPRING WATER now available at Carmoora Clinic - the latest delivery came in yesterday! Many thanks to all who brought back their empty flagons. Flagons cost $12 each and have been greatly appreciated by people who cannot drink mains water for health reasons. As Australian soils tend to be old and leached they usually contain less fluoride than in other countries, so most Australian spring water is low fluoride. Carmoora gets in a special type of spring water, and it tastes just how water should!

MULLEIN FLOWERS make a useful remedy for your ears, whether infected or just sore. The preparation made from the yellow petals is called Mullein Oil, and is based on glycerine. Just a few drops in the ear each day can lead to much improvement, and for some people this occurs over quite a short time. The flowers grow on a spear that can be one to two metres long and looks very impressive. Long ago these dried spears were used as torches, steeped in tallow and set alight to show the way at night.

Fluoride sensitive patients who can't give up tea drinking are now switching to Daintree tea, which is 100% Australian grown and organic. They followed our earlier advice to try weak versions of Australian grown tea, but recently noticed another brand we recommended has been blended with tea from overseas. So read the small print on your packets carefully! The reason Carmoora suggests 100% Australian grown tea is that Australian soils are much lower in fluoride than most soils in other tea growing countries such as India and Sri Lanka. The tea plant takes up fluoride in the soil, unlike the coffee plant, and the tea with the lowest levels can be expected where soil content is lowest. Patients told us they noticed the old symptoms, such as urgent urination and leg pains, had inexplicably returned the last six months or so. Ideally patients who are very sensitive to fluoride should give up tea but many find low fluoride tea made with spring water does not produce symptoms.

Christmas is coming and our last day open for 2024 will be a bit earlier than usual. Carmoora is open until 2pm on Friday 20th December. As in previous years all are welcome to join us in a lunchtime get together in the waiting room 12pm to 1pm, for nibbles and a cuppa. Back again mid January 2025. It's quite a long break this year and so there may be a day in January when Carmoora is open, to be announced. Or you can be like Santa, who likes to get in early with his meds order. Here he is being served by Philip.
