NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW THIS! The name "Carmoora" was made from the names of the two streets at its corner, Moorabool Street and Carr Street. The idea was that it would help people find their way there, although we are not sure it ever did.... For unknown reasons Carr Street has recently been renamed Chilwell Street. Here is the evidence, in a photo taken from Moorabool Street looking toward the railway line and bridge! But we are not going to rename Carmoora Clinic, it stays just as it has been since 1992. Welcome in!

Globe artichokes are both a delicious food and medicinal, helping blood sugar metabolism. If you can't grow them for lack of space, try the ones in jars that we sell in Carmoora's little shop. Just add the pieces to salads or put on pizzas. All thistles with their very prickly defence outside, can be quite delicious on the inside because they do not need to be bitter to fend off enemies. Here is a cheerful demonstration of thistle-eating by a British man, who also explains how the thistle came to be the emblem of Scotland. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lg6RGwz5GMY

TUESDAYS are marked as closed just now because our Acupuncturist Prof. Qi-wen Li is on an extended visit overseas. Back again in the new year, details to follow. But you can still pick up meds and visit at prearranged times any weekday. Just phone the clinic, wait for the diversion to a mobile, and make an arrangement with Jan who lives nearby.

NASTURTIUMS are flowers that are decorative, easily grown and edible, and they are also medicinal. They contain LUTEIN, which is good for eyesight, and the strongest coloured ones are best for this. Philip likes to take 7 of the brightest coloured flowers and blend them. then adding the liquid into a drink, such as a smoothie.

Saint Mary's Thistle is a large spiky plant with a history of helping people resist infections. Its seeds contain an antioxidant that helps the liver function. Even grazing animals will seek it out and eat it. Once the only information about the healing properties of this plant was written down in Latin, so only monks and nuns knew about it. They used it to good effect, e.g. for sufferers of bubonic plague, without knowing about the antioxidants. Rather, they just considered it a blessing from Saint Mary, hence the name.

CALCIUM IS GOOD FOR BONES BUT YOU ALSO NEED VITAMIN D3 AND K2 at the same time. These vitamins are called co-factors for calcium. They help the calcium from your food get into your bones, not your arteries. Vitamin K2 is not always easy to come across. A rich source is the fermented food NATTO, available from Asian Foods in Belmont, just outside Geelong city. One of the white packages in the picture should last you a week, or even longer if you eat Natto raw at the same time as you eat peas and beans. This is because it is a fermented food that can then go on working, like yoghurt does. The texture is a bit odd and takes getting used to. The good news is, that if you don't like it raw you can cook it mixed with other food without losing the vitamin K2. Best however is to slip a small amount into a stir fry at the last minute. Some people need it every day, others not as often, it is an individual tendency that seems to run in families.

DANDELIONS are useful in more than one way. The leaves are made up into kidney tonics and the roots into liver tonics. You can also use them yourself at home, adding a few green leaves finely chopped into salads or herbal tea, or blending the leaves into a smoothie. For liver health use the root. You will need to get nice sized roots preferably before the plant flowers, scrub and finely slice to add to soup. And if you can find enough roots, scrub, dry and grind them into a powder for a pleasant-tasting drink that is used as a coffee substitute. The best sized roots grow under fruit trees or in your vegetable garden. Strangely, dandelions have an affinity for humans! They grow in very odd places in cities and gardens, even cracks in pavements, and their seeds blow far in the wind. Yet you may find them growing all around buildings such as farmhouses but not out in the paddocks - a dandelion mystery!
