Sometimes the inside world (home)reflects the outer (society). It can be chaotic, busy, noisy, full of deadlines, expectations and multi-tasking.
How can you walk more slowly, talk more softly and bring the quiet and calm energy to your home?

I have been very quiet on the socials and have set a goal to increase awareness through little snippets of gold from the world of play therapy.

Here’s the first!
When a young person asks you to play, it’s extending an invitation to be a part of their world and is so much more than play. It’s unconditional time and holding space and the gift of the child expressing their needs through what and how they play.

The way to be the reason someone in your life feels included, welcomed, supported, safe and valued is to beside them unconditionally.
Listen without feeling the need to fix.
Say back to the person what you see and hear, rather than passing judgement or steering.
We all have the innate ability to problem solve for ourselves given the time and space.

Let’s bust a few myths:

❌ “They’re just playing”
✅ Complex processes (neurological, physical and relational) are occurring in playful moments

❌ “Learning does not happen through playing”
✅ Learning through play has important pedagogical functions

❌ “Playing won’t help you if you’re stressed”
✅ Play is a natural stress reliever

❌ “Play Therapy is not evidence-based”
✅ Play Therapy is evidenced-based with substantial empirical research

Love this one.
The core of play therapy is sharing the space with the young person and providing the environment for them to feel seen, heard and understood.
This is equally important for adults. Invite your uncomfortable feelings to tea ☕️🫖

The news can be scary for us as grown ups let alone as children.
Mr. Rogers gives a timely reminder of the need to ground our children in times of dysregulation, threat and uncertainty.
Focusing on the helping and providing physical & emotional security for your child shifts the focus.
War is often played out in the play space as a reflection of a child’s inner world and perceptions. As a child’s therapist, I reflect these thoughts back to them through what and how they play, am completely unconditional and genuinely empathetic.
Play Therapy really is the most effective and developmentally appropriate form of psychotherapy for children. Relieving stresses through play, what better way is there?

So much easier said than done huh 🤷‍♂️🤦

Everyone has the need to be seen, heard and valued.

When our lives are so busy and we have our own ‘stuff’ going on, it can be really tricky to take a moment, take a breath and reflect on the need underpinning the child’s big emotion.

Children are not yet developmentally able to express their needs through words and often do it by externalising with big emotions. If grown ups meet these big emotions with calm and understanding then we are coregulating with the child and bringing them safely into the calm.

At Mind Sparkle, children enter the play space each session, knowing they have autonomy in the space. This means that they choose what they want to play and how. This allows children to SHOW their feelings without having to talk about or label them. Children express their needs through play with me as their therapist who is completely unconditional, empathetic and congruent. It’s a privilege to be invited into the world of the child and to witness their innate ability for self-growth & development.
