Massage therapy isn’t just about optimal performance in our younger athletic horses – it’s about quality of life too. In particular, I have our more senior equines in mind.
When we think about massage therapy in terms of performance for younger horses, it is a vital aspect of their combined care toward maintaining body function and comfort. As owners, we cover many aspects that impact our horses bodies - hoof angles, teeth, core strength, balance, muscle health and gut health are but a few points to mention.
📌 As our fur-friends inevitably begin to age:
🐴 their cardio and lymphatic circulation slows down,
🐴 muscles lose tone and become weaker,
🐴 joints get stiffer and movement gets harder,
🐴 compensatory muscle patterns kick in (creating primary and secondary presentations, and likely pain),
🐴 posture changes,
🐴 strength and balance are reduced,
🐴 and the immune system becomes compromised too.
So, even though our older equines may not be in work, it makes perfect sense that this care is just as important for supporting them while they are experiencing the natural progress of life.
Regular massage not only promotes better circulation, muscle heath and mobility, but also helps to reduce mental and physical stress - leading to improvements in overall wellness and quality of life.
📌 Equine massage therapy:
🐴 Stimulates the lymphatic system, removing toxins from the body.
🐴 Stimulates blood flow, in addition to the respiratory and digestive systems.
🐴 Helps maintain muscle health.
🐴 Aids in balancing/regulating the nervous system.
🐴 Provides pain relief / management for long-term compensation, old injuries and arthritis.
🐴 Relieves age related stiffness and mobility.
🐴 Improves posture and helps to reduce compensatory muscle tension.
🐴 Relieves stress.
🐴 Improves wellness and overall quality of life.
I see quite a few senior horses in my rounds and I absolutely love this on so many different levels. I am a sucker for the older horse. There is so much appreciation and respect for the life they have lived and the lessons they have given us (both literally and emotionally). To me, they are not disposable because their duty under saddle is no longer suited to our needs. They give us so much. Perhaps even more than we realise at times, and in this busy world it can be easy to miss taking a moment pause and reflect on their own individuality, life experiences – and of course the joy they have brought to our own lives.
📌 Here are a few things you can look out for that may indicate your senior equine may benefit from massage therapy:
🐴 Their posture has changed,
🐴 Movement is slower,
🐴 Changes in gait,
🐴 They are less flexible – particularly in the joints and neck,
🐴 They may have become sensitive to grooming / touch.
We are all doing what we can, however next time you’re out with your elderly equine and they give you that soft nicker or a flick of a floofy ear as they notice you approach – stop, listen and notice - and remember they are a living, breathing, deserving beings too, and if we can afford them the care of massage, it is wholeheartedly worth it xx
