Acupuncture in Preparation for Labour

The last few weeks of pregnancy are a beautiful dance between your body and your baby as you prepare for birth.

Your body is already softening tissues, ripening the cervix, balancing hormones and helping your baby find their best position.

Acupuncture can gently support this process by:
-Encouraging hormonal shifts that aid cervical ripening
-Promoting relaxation and oxytocin flow
-Supporting optimal baby positioning
-Preparing your body for an efficient labour

Research by midwife Debra Betts has shown women who had weekly acupuncture from 36 weeks experienced shorter labours and fewer medical inductions.

Starting at week 36/37, pre-birth acupuncture is a gentle way to prepare your body and mind for this big transition.

“Extreme Yin turns into Yang, and extreme Yang turns into Yin.” The Neijing

The menstrual cycle is a beautiful dance of Yin and Yang, something women experience each month.

At menstruation, there’s a drop in temperature, the time of Yin. As the cycle moves toward ovulation the temperature rises, marking the beginning of Yang. These shifts are mirrored in the flow of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone.

When we understand these transitions, we can better support our bodies and appreciate living with a hormonal cycle.

In Chinese Medicine spring is the season of the Wood element, which relates to the Liver and Gallbladder. Just like the flowers beginning to bud we can also feel this sense of growth and expansion within our own bodies.

A few ways you can support yourself this spring:

1. Protect your neck. Spring brings more wind which in Chinese Medicine is seen as a cause of illness like colds, hayfever, and coughs. Even if the sun is out don’t throw off the layers too quickly! The neck is a key entry point for wind so keep a scarf handy.

2. Add some sour flavours. A splash of vinegar or squeeze of lemon on lightly steamed greens can do wonders. Sour flavours support the Liver, helping to astringe fluids and nourish the blood.

3. Stretch and twist. The Liver loves flow and movement. Gentle stretching, twisting, or yoga helps the sinews and fascia move freely after winter’s stillness.

4. Get creative. Creativity shifts stuck energy. Whether it’s baking, drawing, singing, or dancing finding a creative outlet helps release frustration, boredom, or overwhelm.

5. Rest your eyes. The Liver is also connected to the eyes. Instead of more screen time, let your eyes rest on the fresh greenery and blossoms of spring. A favourite tea of mine is goji and chrysanthemum which support dry eyes.

Spring is one of my favourite seasons especially if winter has given you the rest you needed. If you’re feeling burnt out or struggling to keep up, acupuncture offers the organs deep rest.

Liver Blood Deficiency is a concept in Chinese Medicine that might really resonate with you.

In clinic, I often see it show up as symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, dizziness, poor sleep, dry eyes, and feeling easily overwhelmed. I describe it as a state of depletion where the body lacks the nourishment it needs to support a smooth, steady flow of energy and emotion.

Imagine a river running low the flow becomes inconsistent, the landscape dry, the system under strain. That’s the nature of Liver Blood Deficiency a lack of internal nourishment that affects everything from mood to menstruation.

Through acupuncture, herbal medicine, and gentle lifestyle support, we work to replenish the blood and bring your system back into balance so you can feel calm, steady, and more like yourself again.

In clinic, people often arrive deeply immersed in their pain and suffering feeling lost, scattered, and unsure of the way forward with their health.

One of the core philosophies that guides how I practice Chinese Medicine is the ability to zoom out. To step back and look at the whole person: their story, what’s influencing them, which systems are out of balance, and what needs to be nourished or supported.

Through this lens, I also encourage clients to begin viewing their own lives with greater perspective to witness themselves with more compassion, to recognise their needs and resources, and to understand the context they’re moving through.

Learning to zoom out to see the bigger picture and recognise just how resilient we are as human beings is one of the most powerful tools I’ve developed as a Chinese Medicine practitioner.

It has taken years of practice, reflection, and trust in this medicine and I love sharing this with people.

You are so much more than your current experience.

Resting during your period is one of the most important ways you can support your overall menstrual health.

In Chinese Medicine menstruation is seen as a time of absolute Yin a phase of stillness, inward focus and restoration. It’s during this time that the body has the opportunity to rebuild its vital resources. These resources are essential for a healthy ovulation and luteal phase. When we nourish ourselves properly during bleeding, we create the foundation for a more balanced cycle free from extreme highs and lows.

Physiologically the brain signals the body to direct energy and blood flow downward to the uterus to support the process of release. But if we continue to push through with work, exercise, or productivity the blood is diverted to the muscles and brain instead. This creates unnecessary internal stress and disrupts the natural flow.

Rest is not a luxury it's productive. By honouring this Yin time, we support the entire cycle to move with more ease and vitality.

These changes were made to allow you to have more time with the needles for extra benefit from treatment but also to make more appointment times available.

When Yin is depleted, the body can either loses its ability to cool, calm, and nourish itself. You might feel hot, dry, restless, or worn out.

In Chinese Medicine, Yin is the cooling, nourishing, and moistening force in the body. It supports rest, fluids, fertility, sleep, and calmness. You can think of Yin as the water element that balances the body's internal fire.

Yin deficiency can develop from overwork, long-term stress, too much heat in the body, chronic illness, or even not enough rest or nourishing food.

In clinic, we support Yin with herbs, acupuncture, rest, and a deeply nourishing lifestyle.

Preconception Care & Fertility Support with Acupuncture 🧚‍♀️

Female fertility is one part of the fertility picture. In Chinese Medicine female fertility is about optimising the internal environment and cycle health to prepare for the seed (s***m).

That’s where Tiaojing Cuyun acupuncture, or “acupuncture for regulating menstruation and promoting pregnancy,” shines. Acupuncture supports hormonal health and supports ovarian function, focusing on meridians that flow through the uterus and ovaries, all while calming the mind. 🌱

Benefits of Tiaojing Cuyun Acupuncture:
-Promotes healthy blood flow to the reproductive organs
-Supports the HPO axis (hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis), essential for hormonal balance
-Enhances cycle regularity and ovulation
-Prepares the uterus for implantation, improving pregnancy outcomes
-Relieves symptoms related to low estrogen and emotional stress, encouraging whole-body wellness
