Happy Wattle Day! I recall as a young child always feeling so excited seeing the bright yellow flower throughout the Australia native bush. This year it is offering me an added sense of resilience and hope after the cold, wet winter in Gembrook. For me it's nature's way of reminding us to pause, breathe and take in the beauty around us. Each season has it's own purpose - and today, the wattle brings a little boost of light and relief knowing spring is here. - Michelle

🌿 "The difference in levels of anxiety experienced in my boys – from high anxiety, to low and calm at the end (of the session)."

This powerful feedback captures the heart of our Wellness Workshop held on Saturday 14 June in Edenhope — a calm, supportive space for families to learn practical tools for managing anxiety, especially the kind that can become heightened or “stuck” after stressful events like storms.

The event offered a mix of learning, connection, and experiential activities with our incredible horses through Equine Assisted Learning (EAL). Together, we explored how anxiety shows up in our minds and bodies, and how we can respond in ways that bring regulation, clarity, and calm.

What we covered during the session:

🔹 Worry vs Anxiety – We explored the difference between worry (thought-based, often about future problems) and anxiety (a more physical, emotional experience). Naming it helps guide how we respond.

🔹 DBT-Based Regulation Skills – Participants learned and practiced practical strategies like mindful breathing, grounding through movement, TIPP skills and sensory awareness — useful tools for moments of dysregulation.

🔹 Reframing Overwhelming Thoughts – When anxiety takes over, our thinking can become unhelpful. We talked about how to notice and gently shift these patterns, especially in moments of emotional overwhelm.

🔹 When Anxiety Gets Stuck – Sometimes, stress lingers in the body. To help shift this, we began with a five-senses grounding activity, encouraging participants to slow down and really take in the environment — the colours of the trees, the sounds of birds, the feel of the ground beneath us. This not only had a calming effect, but also prepared us to engage more openly and calmly with the horses.

💬 More reflections from participants:
"I felt calmer and connected."
"So beneficial for the family, much appreciated."
"The most impactful thing about this session was how calm I felt afterwards and understanding the importance of 'slowing down' and taking the environment in."

Horses are intuitive and honest, responding not to what we say, but to how we feel. They help us notice what's happening internally, and teach us — simply by being themselves — how to slow down, self-regulate, and connect.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to our wonderful herd for helping hold the space so gently. 🐴

If you'd like to join us for our final free session this coming Saturday 21 June 10am - 12pm, message here or contact us at michelle@edenhopepsychotherapy or ‭0412 326 431‬. We have just a few spots left.

Thanks to Cardinia Shire Council for funding these wonderful events.

Our open day is a wrap! Thank you to all who visited over the past couple of days. It’s been wonderful to share our little piece of heaven with you and talk about our counselling, psychotherapy and equine assisted learning services. We actually had a very busy time - combining our Open Day with our participation at the Everything Disability Expo in Pakenham. It was such a pleasure to speak to so many enthusiastic and friendly people and share how Equine Assisted Learning can support social–emotional skills, such as emotional regulation, communication, relationship skills, and more. We took our miniature horses to have some gentle connections with attendees. They seemed to manage the new adventure very well, even managing a few cat-naps along the way.

Will I make new friends? What if someone laughs at me? Will I be okay?

I remember, as a teenager starting at a new school, feeling overwhelmed by questions like these.

It can feel rough being the new kid on the block!

As many of us start or head back to work or studies, anxiety-inducing thoughts can creep in, giving way to fear and lingering unease. These feelings aren’t random—our evolutionary learning has shaped them, making us naturally cautious in social situations.

But while this response may be “normal,” it doesn’t make it feel easy or comfortable. In reality, it can leave us feeling sick to the stomach and dreading the thought of showing up. So, how can we support ourselves through this discomfort?

Perhaps we can take a cue from Jade, our newest horse to join the herd.

When she first arrived, she faced a new environment and unfamiliar companions. At first, she observed quietly, giving herself space away from the herd—perhaps to process her surroundings and resource herself by grazing. But with time and small, intentional steps, she began to engage—curious, cautious, and gradually showing a willingness to connect. She didn’t rush or force herself to fit in. Instead, she allowed her confidence to build through experience. Now, just a few weeks later, it’s clear she’s found her place in the herd.

What can we learn from Jade?

Give yourself space: It’s okay to feel uncertain. Take the time you need to adjust and settle.

Start with small steps: A friendly conversation, a small act of curiosity—these are meaningful steps toward building confidence and connection.

Be kind to yourself: Feeling anxious doesn’t mean you’re failing. It’s just part of learning, adapting, and growing.

Remember, growth often happens in moments of discomfort, and you don’t have to be perfect. Be patient with yourself—you’re doing better than you think, just by showing up!
