Phew! What a fantastic 2 days working alongside Dr Louise Cosgrove and the Gelding Scar and Mare ovarian manipulation.

Every time I observe this amazing work she is doing I learn more and more, there are always some interesting cases.
This time I thoroughly enjoyed the mare manipulations, amazing to see the huge reactions and very obvious changes once the o***y unravels and is no longer twisted.

I had the privilege of externally manipulating/massaging around half of the 20plus horses presenting on over the 2 days.

But the most heart-warming part of this experience is the stories, so many similar stories.
'My horse is just not right, I have tried everything, this is my last option' and the tears of relief when Dr Louise rectifies the problem and offers a road to recovery, let me tell you I was holding back the tears myself.

For the future I want this to not be the last thing we check for, I would love it to be the first thing we check when something just isn't right, unfortunately this approach is not widely accepted particularly by other vets, but the proof is in the pudding and the word is spreading, and we all know as horse people what happens with word of mouth in the horse world.

P.S Louise is great sport about some of the unusual photo positions I took great delight in taking 😉😉

Alot of my clients will hear me bang on about this muscle and how important it is.

Not only is it one of the last muscles to develop but it often times requires targeted training excercises to assist in it's development.

What can I do I hear you say! Here are some options:
1. Poles poles and more poles. (Elevate your poles slightly if your horse is a superstar at ground poles and needs a little more of a challenge).
2. Back up, 10 steps a day minimum. You want straight non resistant back up, a lift and no drag of the hind leg, which comes with repetition and time (super star horses can back up a gentle slope to increase challenge)
3. Hacking out, straight lines, slopes.

I use this often on horses that are feeling uncertain or agitated, the calming effect is quite remarkable.

Why Wednesday ~ Why is the Bladder Meridian so important?

🔹The bladder meridian is a major acupuncture meridian to which all the other meridians connect, and it balances the entire meridian system.
🔹It runs over or near the main junctions of the horse where you will work. It serves as an initial "fact-finding" tool as well as getting first releases.
🔹It is easy to reach while allowing you to watch the horses responses.
🔹It has a calming effect.
🔹The goal of this technique is to bypass the horse's survival-defense response and connect directly with the part of the horse's nervous system that holds and releases tension.
🔹The most important reason to begin working on the bladder meridian is because it establishes the interaction of Touch and Response between you and the horse. At the same time, it calms the horse and prepares him for the bodywork to follow.

Giving their own massages is no longer necessary. After a crazy year due to covid, I am back at it!!
If your pony needs a massage, get in quick before Xmas.

This is spot on, couldn't agree more.
There was a time when 4+ was the normal and average age for a horse to be started under saddle, I'm not sure how we have lost our way but we need to get back to this. The development of the horses body relies heavily on the decision we make as owners and riders.
