Research has found that Australian surfers are developing melanomas at three times the national average.
The reported locations of skin cancers in about 23 per cent had them on the face and that was followed by the back at 16 per cent and the arms.
Surfers and other beachgoers are urged to cover up from the sun with rash vests, hats and sunscreen and to get regular skin checks.

Skin cancer deaths in older farmers (over 65 years) are more than double the rate of other Australians. Protecting yourself from our harsh environment is imperative and so are regular skin checks.

Sunscreen Tips
⛱ Use a good quality SPF50 sunscreen every day 20 minutes before you go in the sun.
⛱ Use a generous amount of sunscreen. For the average adult, you need a teaspoon of sunscreen for each major part of your body ie. your head and neck, for each limb and for the front and back of your body (approx 7 teaspoons)
⛱ If possible it is better to protect yourself from the sun with clothing, a hat, shade and sunglasses. You should apply a SPF50 broad-spectrum sunscreen to any skin not covered by clothing.
⛱ If you are doing an activity in water or where you are sweating excessively you will need a water-resistant sunscreen and to reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours.
⛱ If you have an allergic reaction to a sunscreen, try another brand or look for a fragrance-free product such as a toddler or sensitive sunscreen.
