πŸ’› A Big Week at MWCLA! πŸ’›
Last week was full of fun, connection and plenty of smiles across MWCLA and the wider community! Our Hangout Room was pumping with Zumba, while creativity shone through with Easter craft making and basket weaving at QEII 🐣🧺
We proudly celebrated World Down Syndrome Day by rocking our mismatched socks, decorating delicious cupcakes and sharing lots of laughs πŸ’™πŸ§¦πŸ§
There were also plenty of chats and cuppas, friendly games of pool and Uno, action in our Secret Agent Society program, weekly Bingo, and, a lively community disco that many of the customers attended, to top it all off πŸ•ΊπŸŽΆ
Thank you to everyone who joined in and helped make the week so special β€” community, creativity and connection at its best πŸ’«

We would like to give a big shout-out to Neil, who volunteered as a host when the cruise ship arrived in Geraldton last Friday 13th April for the Seabourn Sojourn passenger ship visit. Neil was welcoming visitors, chatting with them, and proudly showing them around using a map of Geraldton. He was incredibly excited to be helping out and sharing information about our town, and it was wonderful to see his confidence and enthusiasm shining through. Thank you, Neil, for representing our community so warmly! πŸŒŸβš“

πŸ§¦πŸ’™ World Down Syndrome Day – πŸ’™πŸ§¦
Tomorrow at MWCLA we’re proudly celebrating World Down Syndrome Day by wearing mismatching socks to start conversations and show our support. World Down Syndrome day is officially on March 21st.
The date (21/3) represents Trisomy 21, where people with Down syndrome have three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two. It’s a perfect reminder that our differences are something to celebrate.
We celebrate the strengths, individuality, and contributions of people with Down syndrome today and every day. πŸ’›
Join us by rocking your mismatched socks and helping spread awareness, inclusion, and belonging.

Around 1 in every 800 babies will be born with Down syndrome.Β Down syndrome occurs naturally – there is no known cause.

We loved seeing Lauren Perrin out and about today, using her community access support time to take part in the fantastic Fishability program at the Geraldton Jetty! 🎣✨ Lauren had a wonderful morning enjoying the fresh air, learning new skills, and connecting with others in the community. Lauren even had success catching and releasing a couple of butterfly fish. Programs like this create inclusive opportunities for everyone to participate, have fun, and build confidence β€” and Lauren absolutely shone today! 🌟

🌟 MWCLA Weekly Highlights 🌟
It’s been a short but wonderfully active week at MWCLA, with everyone getting out and about and making the most of their favourite activities!
Neil had an absolute blast at the Speedway, soaking up the excitement and cheering on the racers. Kaitlin and Kristy enjoyed some time at home getting creative in the kitchen, cooking up delicious meals with plenty of pride. Judith has been busy practising her counting skills and is making fantastic progress. The regular Wednesday Lighthouse lunch goers enjoyed lunch and a chat.
Back at MWCLA, the activity room has been buzzing with energyβ€”lots of laughs over games of pool, friendly competition during bingo, and plenty of fun on the PlayStation. It’s been a great week of connection, learning, and enjoying time together.
Here’s to more adventures and good times ahead! πŸŽ‰

Our customers have been very active out and about this week. πŸ€©πŸŒŸπŸŽ‰πŸ‘

Our SAS program is in full swing, learning about emotional regulation and calming techniques.

In art we painted hearts and made air dry clay hearts to make a wind chime. Some have spent time painting and colouring in. πŸŒˆπŸ’–πŸ’•

We have been participating in zumba, table tennis, karoke and using the interactive screen. πŸ‘πŸ’ƒ

Customers enjoyed customer lunch at Barnacles. Some other customers went for a drive to check out the flooded Greenough River. πŸš—πŸŒŠ

A busy week at MWCLA. 🎨Art program is on Mondays and this week we continued our heart theme, decorating an acrylic background with shells and sea glass to make a pretty hanger. ❀️

SAS is in full swing with two cohorts of teens coming in to the HUB to take part in the program to learn social and emotional regulation skills and strategies. πŸ™‚πŸ™ƒ

The interactive wall and mobile table top units are getting plenty of use as the customers learn to navigate through 330 activities. πŸ€

We started Zumba in the HUB this week as an activity on Monday and as an alternative to Walkie Talkies because of the impending weathπŸ•ΊπŸ’ƒ

We have had many people collecting and bundlung newspapers throughout the week, inclyding a new cillection pount at Petro Fuel Station. πŸ“°

We celebrated a birthday or 3 this week and sang wirh gusto to celebrate.

We rounded out the week with BINGO.🎱 Kieran won the speaker he had been trying to win for ages.

Kaitlin has been cooking up a storm ready for the Variety Cocktail Function in March.

Pop in any time and check out whats happening in the HUB. 🎊🎈

Have you ever wondered what happens to the newspapers that the people and businesses in our community donate to Jack's Shed?

The customers of MWCLA are currently collecting newspapers from 25 businesses and services around Geraldton. They take them to Jack's Shed at the Aquarena to take the glossys out and make them bundles. The bundles are stacked onto pallets until there are 96 bundles on a pallet, which totals 1 tonne of paper!
When we have 12 pallets ready they get wrapped and strapped. We sell them to two companies and they get transported to Perth or Bunbury to turn into Hydromulch.
If you would like to know more please contact JO Luxton at MWCLA.

The past week at MWCLA has been really busy. Our activity room has been a hive of activity. The customers had a fabulous session using fabric markers to decorate calico to make a bag to carry their cup to and from the HUB.

Bingo was back and the room was full, with some great number callers and lots of winners. Many of the customers have been dropping in to play cards, have a cuppa or eat lunch, especially when it was so hot. πŸŒˆπŸŽ‰πŸ‘πŸ’«

Jack's shed has been busy with customers collecting and bundling newspapers.

If you like the sound of our activities at MWCLA come and check us out for yourself at 4/89 Durlacher St Geraldton.
