We listened and watched in total awe as this mumma fought her primal instinct to call out as another powerful surge rolled through her, bringing her baby lower through her pelvis. She knew she just could not wake her toddler who was just drifting off to sleep, way past his usual bedtime. It had been a big evening. A bit of a start/stop labour, promising to pick up, and then backing off again. As soon as he was fast asleep, tucked safely into bed at the other end of the hallway, her body performed the miracle she’d been waiting for, her baby girl arriving smoothly into the water, received by dad’s waiting hands.

When Bec first contacted me about my availability, my heart sank a little as I knew I’d be away over her due date. We had a solid back-up plan for whilst I would be away, but I really wanted to be there. When I touched down back in Australia, I texted her, ‘landed!’ But baby Joel had it all sorted, and it was a week later when he decided to make his entrance earthside.

Bec holds her body very still during her labours. When I arrived at her home she was side-lying on her bed with the TENs on. Supported by Chad, working beautifully with the surges. Her noises told us that baby was not far off. We began filling the pool, knowing it was her wish to water birth. But when the time came to get in, she couldn’t move. I grabbed more towels to lay over the bed, expecting a bed birth. However, with more encouragement she dug deeper still, and with determination she made the short walk to the pool. Sinking in to the support of the warm water she sighed, we all sighed and let go. Less than 20 minutes later, her darling baby Joel was in her arms. His big sister Averly woke up and came to meet him. Grandma and Pop couldn’t believe he was here, as Bec had so quietly and expertly birthed him whilst they were waiting in another room! A truely beautiful birth x

(And thank you little guy Joel, for arriving at the perfect time and allowing me to be part of your birth story.)

“I can’t do this anymore!!’

Kaity (second midwife), Dusty (student midwife) and I watched as Rach, supported by her husband Luke and mother Gemma, moved her body intuitively, sounded with an open throat and powerfully brought her baby earthside in the birth pool. Her beloved dogs kept guard, playing together and staying close. Total magic.

There is something very special about a multigenerational birth team. A mother and father, witnessing, supporting, holding space as their daughter births their grandchild. A midwife and her daughter, teaching, learning, supporting one another as they work together to care for the new family-emerging.

I do believe true magic was woven in that living room that morning. A powerful peace prayer that ripples out of that home, across the land and through all the people present.

Baby Oliver, his arrival, this incredible parents’ preparation journey, stand for love, cohesion, community, responsibility, more love, growth, and the seeds of the world we want to create.

Ha, I’m on an oxytocin high x

I woke to 14 missed calls.

I called her straight away. She laughed, ‘The baby’s out’.

Never before has my phone been on silent whilst I’ve been on call for a birth. Both my husband and I slept through the repeated silent, yet vibrating phone calls.

I quickly packed my kit into my car and headed over. I walked in to Kimmy and Brody’s home in the early morning. Nestled in her arms was baby Sadie, breastfeeding. Sadie’s older sisters excitedly showed me their baby. The placenta was sitting in a bowl, her bleeding was minimal. They’d chosen to have a cord burning to separate baby and placenta. I was shown the photos and the video that captured their birth journey. The stories rolled in. It was the perfect birth. An incredibly healing birth after two traumatic hospital births. Ash their amazing doula had made it just in time. Sadie had been in a rush and less than 45 mins had passed between their first call to me and her arrival.

It has taken me time to process my fallibility as their midwife. Failing to show up for the task they had employed me for. I also know that this birth unfolded safely, and in the way that was needed. They knew to call an ambulance in an emergency. We had been through various scenarios where this might be the case. But in the moment, they had felt safe, held, and in control. They had known exactly what to do.

Kimmy’s personal growth journey which began long before she invited me into their pregnancy care is awe inspiring. Learning to trust herself and step away from stories, patterns and unhelpful doctrines has led her to an informed, nurturing, self-aware and present mother. Whilst I ‘missed’ the birth, I have loved caring for this family and being a part of their journey.

I’ve just published a new newsletter to your inboxes. Here’s a little excerpt:

“Fast forward to my Bachelor of Midwifery degree. From the beginning it felt so right. Academically I excelled. It was all women-centred language and geared towards autonomous practice. But in practical placement it was another story. The chasm between what I was learning as evidence-based best practice and the fear, coercion and abuse I was experiencing in institutional care was overwhelming. I howled like a wounded child after my first two births. Other students found me in the corridors and rushed to support me and call in our midwife mentors. 'It’s just so violent', I managed to articulate through sobs.”

thank you for a wonderful conference.

Living regionally, midwifery can be pretty isolating, especially in private practice, so I knew I wanted to network and make stronger connections (but that’s hard too!).

It was super special to go with and meet some of her midwife student buddies and clinical facilitators. There’s a feeling of building something really strong and generational in working together. Perhaps we’ll work together in partnership one day….

So many great presentations today, emotional, real, devastating and hopeful. Keynotes by and were fantastic.

Key themes were ‘it takes a village’ to raise a child, to support a midwife, to create change. We can’t do this alone, divided or fighting one another other. Imagine how powerful we would be if we stood together and supported one another. Midwives, doulas and consumers, we’d be unstoppable.

A major takeaway for me was that growth and change are messy. I am committed to getting comfortable with the mess!

To retreat is such a privilege. And also so essential. I’ve returned with renewed determination to continue my work, and to care for myself in the deepest of ways.

Profound gratitude to .both.yoga for sharing her love and devotion to the breath with us, and for calling in (from infinite possibilities) the brave-soul women who journeyed together on that mountain and in the waters of north Bali xx

Jai Ma!

My first caravan homebirth!

This groovy family have been on the road for her whole pregnancy. We managed with phone consults and a couple health clinic drop ins, to have the ultrasound scans and bloods she wanted, and check in on them both. The last month of her pregnancy we met frequently, me learning what was most important to her.

The day of Banjo’s birth was sunny and warm. A good thing, as we went through all the gas bottles keeping the pool warm. Not an ‘easy’ birth, she worked so damn hard to bring him down, and she did. One of those ‘travelling to the universe to bring him through’ births. Afterwards, she took some time coming back into her body. Unhurried, making a nest on the ground next to the birth pool, she did. Slowly returning from the epic adventure.

I love the green placenta bucket 🪣 - a simple vessel to hold the sacred organ. Just like this family: practical, no fuss, but deeply connected. The placenta was later buried in ceremony on the land of Banjo’s birth.
