Autistic people can experience overwhelm in many ways.

Sensory input like lights, sounds, textures, or smells can become intense. Social interactions or masking can be draining. Managing multiple tasks or sudden changes may feel challenging. Strong emotions can build quickly and feel overwhelming. Processing large amounts of information at once can be difficult. Quiet time and downtime are often needed to recover and recharge.

Overwhelm is not a weakness - it reflects neurological differences, not a flaw.

Research consistently shows that 50โ€“80% of autistic people experience significant sleep issues.

Some fall asleep, but wake up repeatedly throughout the night,
and others may wake up ungodly early and donโ€™t go back to sleep.

And some of us cycle through periods of being awake for 20+ hours at a time, completely exhausted but unable to โ€œshut off.โ€

Autistic brains often have differences in melatonin production and arousal regulation.

โ€ฆMeaning that sleep issues are NOT a choice, nor are they a result of poor discipline.

We just often have bodies donโ€™t follow the same rhythm as everyone elseโ€™s.

Iโ€™m writing this after being awake for over 24 hours straight.

And I promise I followed all the best practices for good โ€œsleep hygiene.โ€

But sometimes, my brain just doesnโ€™t power down.
And I know Iโ€™m not the only one.

Supporting autistic kids at school. This is a great way to communicate with your child's teacher ๐Ÿฉต

I was that parent who ended up talking to the teacher every single day, before and after school.

'This is what our night and morning was like, this is where my kid is at today. Please look after them by ... '

At the end of the day it was the teacher telling me something from the day. 'They had a good day' or 'they didn't meet expectations today.'

I always wanted specifics.
I wanted to know what had happened, what those expectations were, what supports were in place, what the adult's response was, if the adult had tried to be flexible or understanding.

I didn't go in looking to start fights.
I wasn't trying to be hard work.
I needed information about what was happening at school. Because my kid wasn't fine there.

I created this teacher-parent communication template. I know that every teacher won't have time to use it for every kid. But if a particular student is really struggling at school, struggling to attend, and the adults are trying to support them, I think this resource could be helpful.

I hope.

It's a move away from standard behaviour slips, at any rate.

Spoon Theory is a way of explaining how energy works for many autistic and other neurodivergent people, as well as people with disability, chronic illness, or mental health differences.

Each โ€œspoonโ€ represents a unit of energy.
Daily tasks โ€” getting dressed, social interaction, sensory processing, transitions, decision-making โ€” all use spoons.

Some days start with fewer spoons.
Some tasks cost more spoons than expected.
And once the spoons are gone, theyโ€™re gone.

This isnโ€™t about motivation or attitude.

So often, adults focus on the โ€œtop levelsโ€ of the developmental tower โ€” things like independence, self-management, emotional control, or executive functioning.

These are the building blocks that everything else rests on.
