♡ Chronic Pain ♡

1 in 5 Australians suffer from persistent or chronic pain. It is a debilitating, disabling, overwhelming, frustrating and confusing condition, and for many people, it is a condition that they manage alone.

Persistent, or chronic pain occurs when pain persists beyond the normal expected healing time for that injury or condition. This is normally around 12 weeks.

Chronic pain is phenomenally complex and we see so many variations of chronic pain that it is often difficult to predict what the most effective treatment may be. Many options exist to help treat or manage chronic pain.

♡ cancer related fatigue ♡

Fatigue is often poorly understood by both those who experience it as well as by the greater community. It is defined as

“Feeling extremely tired, weak and lacking energy” – Cancer Council Australia

Unlike tiredness, fatigue is not always improved by sleep and rest and can encompass not only the physical tiredness but mental exhaustion as well. Research has found that fatigue is one of the most common complaints expressed by individual’s with cancer. Let’s take a closer look at what causes it…

♡ Elvie ♡

There are a myriad of devices on the market to assist in achieving and maintaining pelvic floor health. Recently I had the pleasure of reviewing the Elvie device, a pelvic floor muscle biofeedback trainer used to help build strength and train the coordination of the pelvic floor muscles. This is a completely unpaid and unsponsored review and something I took on as part of my Master’s in Pelvic health degree as well as to help justify implementing it’s use in our clinic. I not only looked at the device and it’s usability, but also the research that sits behind it to best inform our practice.

♡ Leaving on a jet plane: lymphoedema and air travel ♡

With international borders open and air travel back in full swing (albeit a few staffing shortages and delays), now seems like an appropriate time to discuss air travel and lymphoedema. When we fly, there are factors that impact on how quickly or slowly lymph moves around the body.

Because of this, it is important to have strategies you can use if you have or are at risk of developing lymphoedema and are planning to fly.

♡ Why some women can’t have s*x. The mesh interview ♡

By now you would have noticed the controversy and social media noise regarding the notorious mesh procedures being used for pelvic organ prolapse. Hundreds of women have joined a class action lawsuit. In some cases… the results of mesh procedures have been horrific, with tape eroding the soft tissues of the va**na resulting in irreparable pain, damage, further bladder and bowel dysfunction and destruction of women’s s*x lives.

♡ Laser: for so much more than hair removal… ♡

Today I want to introduce one of my favourite therapy tools, the low level laser. Now you may be asking yourself, what would physiotherapists be doing with laser?? No, we have not branched out into the hair removal business nor are we leveling out our therapy room. I actually use this little beauty to assist in improving pain and scarring, to heal wounds, to reduce skin inflammation as well as to break down thickened tissues and even improve lymphoedema.

Follow the link in our bio to read more about how we use lasers or visit our blog at https://calmandconnection.com.au/laser-so-much-more-than-hair-removal/

♡ Not all fibre was created equal ♡

As a pelvic health physiotherapist, I often ask questions to my clients about their bowel habits. Often, I suggest that bowel care is our first line of treatment. As we normalise the bowels, we reduce excessive pressures from the back passage on the bladder and pelvic organs, reduce excessive straining on the toilet that might encourage the pelvic organs to descend and improve discomfort that may be amplifying other pelvic pain conditions such as endometriosis or painful bladder syndrome.

Today I discuss fibre and how to make the most of it for bowel health.

♡ No matter what I do my legs never change shape ♡

Have you noticed that no matter what you do, your legs are always out of proportion to the rest of your body? It doesn’t matter how much you exercise or diet, they just never seem to change shape. When you mention it to health professionals, do you just get told you need to diet or exercise more?

This is an issue that faces many women. Often they are told they have a slow metabolism or they need to exercise more and be stricter with their diet. What may actually be causing this is not lifestyle choices or lack of effort but a condition called lipoedema

♡ A different kind of sports physio ♡

Did you know that more than 40% of elite athlete experience bladder weakness or incontinence during sport. The shocking but true fact is that elite athletes can fall into a high risk category for bladder leakage along with those of us who have had lots of babies, have experienced menopause, are overweight or deconditioned in the pelvic floor muscles.

But why should some of the strongest amongst us suffer from bladder leakage? Turns out it is way more complicated than just “weak pelvic floor muscles”!
