This morning, I sat quietly outside my clinic, surrounded by the soft greenness and coolness of early spring. The gentle sounds of nature reminded me how essential it is to pause and be present. With a warm cuppa in hand, I allowed myself to simply sit in silence, to breathe, to soften, to listen.
This, too, is touch, an inner kind of touch. The touch of awareness meeting the breath, the touch of stillness resting upon the body, the touch of nature’s calm restoring balance within.
Moments like these are vital for self-care. They replenish the quiet strength that allows me to hold space for others with steadiness and compassion.

‘In silence and stillness, we are gently held.’

A couple of weeks ago, I had the great honour of representing my local palliative care hospice, where I volunteer, to attend the 2025 Volunteers Palliative Care Conference in Sydney.
Amongst the several gifted speakers, one who stood out and resonated deeply with me was Dr Cheryl Holmes OAM, who spoke about Spiritual Care in Palliative Care: Heart and Soul Matters. She reminded us that spirituality is unique to each person; it is what gives life meaning, purpose, and connection. What touched me most was her reflection on restorative presence, how spiritual care is more than offering support; it is about helping someone feel whole again, even if just for a moment.
She spoke of giving unhurried time, the gift of sitting without rush. She reminded us that compassion requires time, that belonging answers the deep question, 'Who would miss me? Where do I belong?', and that kindness is most powerful in the small things, warmth in our voice, gentle eye contact, sitting in silence when needed.
A great reminder, as volunteers, we are companions, not counsellors.
Our role is to offer presence, to listen with respect, to encourage the sharing of stories, to honour beliefs and cultures, and to share concerns with the care team when needed.
Being a volunteer is deeply humbling and a great privilege; I am blessed to be of service.

When “No” is the Best Form of Care

Sometimes, the most important part of my work is not in what I do, but in knowing when not to treat.
Recently, a new client came to see me for back pain. On first glance, it may have seemed like a straightforward request for a massage. But, through gentle questioning, after listening carefully to her story, completing her health history, and carrying out a very gentle examination, I knew something wasn’t sitting right. She flinched even with the lightest touch; her pain scale was high, and her movement suggested more than simple muscular strain.
I kindly explained that it wasn’t safe to proceed with massage and instead encouraged her to return to her doctor for scans and review. Three weeks later, she phoned to thank me. The results had shown multiple rib and thoracic fractures, along with further insight into her osteoporosis management.
Her words of gratitude meant so much, but the truth is, this is why I do what I do. Being thorough, professional, and compassionate is not just about offering hands-on care; it’s about holding space, listening deeply, providing holistic care, and making sure clients receive the right care at the right time.
Moments like these remind me of the responsibility and privilege of this work. I am deeply grateful to serve my community in this way.

🌿 I’m honoured to be an on-demand speaker at the Essence of Clinical Aromatherapy International Seminar🌿

My talk, "Primal Senses: "Harnessing Touch and Smell for Calm and Comfort," explores the deeply rooted connection between scent, touch, and our emotional wellbeing. Together, we’ll dive into how these primal senses can support calm, connection, and care - especially in therapeutic and clinical settings.

This seminar brings together an inspiring group of voices in the world of clinical aromatherapy, and I’m thrilled to be part of the conversation, this year.

Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or simply curious about the healing power of essential oils and sensory care, this is a beautiful space to learn, reflect, and grow.
