More about choline because I'm a little obsessed.

⚫ Choline is the precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is crucial for memory and brain health.

⚫ Acetylcholine is a strong satiety signal, which is why anything that stimulates acetylcholine receptors (e.g. ni****ne) suppresses appetite, while anything that blocks acetylcholine receptors (e.g. antihistamines) can increase appetite.

⚫ Choline helps to prevent fatty liver and insulin resistance.

⚫ Estrogen stimulates choline synthesis, which means that some of the brain benefits of estrogen therapy could just be from how it supports choline. (You could also just take choline.)

⚫ Scientists have just discovered that more than 90% of people don't get enough choline.

Naturopathy – the path of nature – the nature path

The practice of Naturopathy has changed quite a bit since I first began studying. People’s expectations have also changed and there are many people with complex and chronic conditions. So much information is available to the general public and research in all fields continues to expand and inform. It is easy to become overwhelmed as a person seeking help and as a practitioner seeking to support.

If we stop and listen and remind ourselves of our true nature (that we are nature) we will see a little something of what can be done.

Our bodies have amazing capabilities to detoxify, cope with changes in environment, deal with stress and adapt to change however long-term pressure on any of our body systems leads to chronic ill health.

Every diversion away from nature is a step closer to imbalance - we can cope with short term pressures.

Just like, every movement towards nature is a step closer to balance – where we thrive in the long term.

Naturopathy at its roots aims to support people come back into balance. To move towards their nature.

The Nature Path:
Wake with the sun, sleep with sun down
Eat during the day, fast at night
Move our bodies throughout the day
Be outside, in the sun
Eat living food that you have prepared
Breathe clean air
Drink clean water
Sleep at night
Rest, recover, de compress during the day. Slow down for a minute. A breath.

Can you take a step closer to nature today?

I’m back in clinic this week after a 2 week break, feeling refreshed and relaxed.

I have a few spots still available in January but it’s filling up quickly. Click in the link in my bio if you’d like to book a consultation with me. All happening via zoom, so you can see me from anywhere 😊

Have just spent the weekend in beautiful Hobart at the naturopathic conference. So many many wonderful speakers.

Just walked passed this beautiful ship, having its ropes adjusted sitting in the calm waters of the harbour. Much like how I feel right now - I’ve had some ropes adjusted - a bit of tweaking here and there - and now letting everything settle before setting sail. 💙

I think naturopaths are cool nerds and I’m happy to be one!

Some herbs to calm the spirit, quell the stress and support mental and physical resilience during exam time for my biggest kid 💚

Nervous system and adrenal tonic herbs work beautifully during times of stress enabling you to feel grounded, sleep well and above all cope with the extra pressure (which they do so well).

My clever friend is deputy editor of Wonderground. I received my first copy in the mail yesterday and I am inspired and comforted by reading and knowing that there are many people who are taking care, delighting and engaging in nature and life in many ways.

I feel connected in a common view/belief of and in nature and my role as a naturopath in it.

4 great things to do on the weekend ❤️😊💕 bring on the oxytocin!!

Oxytocin is such an intriguing hormone.

In animal studies, it has been found to circumvent leptin resistance and promote weight loss by reducing food intake and increasing energy expenditure. It's also great for bone health and is being studied for weight loss and osteoporosis prevention.

Links in the comments to the studies:
- Oxytocin as an anti-obesity treatment
- The "love hormone" oxytocin regulates the loss and gain of the fat-bone relationship

Ways to increase oxytocin include hugging, or**sm, listening to music, and yoga.

Our homes have a microbiome and dampness can disrupt this balance. Mould produces mycotoxins which kill bacteria (good and bad). These toxins are also toxic to us (more on that later).

Ways to limit dampness and mould in your home:
•Enlist a mould assessor to identify whether you have existing mould, where it is and where it’s coming from.
•Get a dehumidifier. You may need more than one and move them around the house. You will soon find out which rooms are most damp by the amount of water it collects.
•Use an air conditioner if you have one – they have a dehumidifier in them.
•You might need to run heating to dry out the house – set it for about 18’C.
•Run your dryer outside
•Turn your bathroom exhausts on and open windows in the bathroom when you shower and leave on for 20 minutes.
•Hang your washing outside undercover.
•Whilst it’s important to have ventilations, external humidity can make your problems worse, so close your windows during the day to limit the humidity entering the house, especially if it’s raining.
•Open up and air on sunny days.
•You might like to purchase a ‘hydrometer’ which measures humidity and temperature.
•Check the sub floor for dampness, clear your gutters and make sure the subfloor vents are clear.

It’s been a wet summer, it’s humid and everything feels a little damp at our place. La Nina is here to stay for a little while longer, so I wanted to share some information on damp, humidity and mould – what to look for and ways you can reduce exposure.

Signs that you have mould in your home are:
•Smell – your house shouldn’t smell of anything. The smell could be musty, like cat wee, earthy or stale.
•A damp smell in cupboards
•Visible signs of mould
•Leather handbags and shoes turning mouldy
•Peeling or bubbling paint on walls or ceilings

Stay tuned for more posts on how to look after the micro biome of your home how to look after you 💚
