As some of you are aware, a little while back I conducted a survey of women who had been diagnosed with pelvic organ prolapse. I was thrilled to receive over ONE HUNDRED responses in just a few shorts days! Many of the participants came via a wonderful Facebook group called POP Fitness. This group w...

Breathe. Rest. Recover. June is POP month - some great info from an amazing pelvic floor physio.

Since June is Pelvic Organ Prolapse Awareness Month…Hallmark are you listening….I thought it might be a good time to share some to help ladies out who are getting their info from ye ole internet. I am all for more info, but so much of it has ultimately generated more fear vs help and healing. So I am officially declaring it Prolapse Hope Month! Kicking it off with some info to help ease your mind….

Immediately post partum you may feel like you have a prolapse, that is not just common it is actually kinda normal. Most women if tested would likely test positive for prolapse right after a va**nal delivery. Things may shift in flight…and pushing a baby out may do the same to your pelvic organs. You may feel symptoms of prolapse like heaviness in your va**na, pressure or pain in the pelvis. Now that women are going to pelvic PTs earlier, we are seeing more reports of prolapse on the internet. DON”T PANIC, because that will only ramp up your symptoms in my experience. Take comfort in understanding some of this is normal and you can implement some simple strategies to help clear those early symptoms and keep a prolapse from becoming a bigger deal:

Truly resting and listening to how your body is responding to movements and exertions (if symptoms escalate with a lift or activity, modify how your are doing it or try again in a few days)

Blowing before you go to eliminate pressure in the abdomen before you move that can push down on organs and stitches. This also triggers a supportive lift of the pelvic floor. (so exhale BEFORE and through the exertion)

At the very least don’t hold your breath for movements and exertions

Don’t jump back into Impact activities out of the gate. Walking and breathing are your two best friends in the early postpartum period.

All can make a big difference in clearing those early symptoms. If you have implemented these strategies and are still having symptoms at 2-3 months post partum then check back in with your doctor or find a pelvic PT in your area.

I’ll be back with more hope soon!
