The last activity for Team DCN in 2025 was to join Gladstone Regional Council for the launch of the access ramp at the GECC. A great way to wrap up another fantastic year!! Big thanks to the councillors and staff of GRC for their progressive attitudes and commitment to inclusivity😀😀

Big thanks to everyone who played a part in our very successful event at Lions Park last Thursday to celebrate the third year of DCN activities and recognise Disability Action Week. Firstly, our co-organisers: Gladstone Regional Council and the Neighbourhood Centre. Our sponsors, Senator Penny Allman-Payne, Glenn Butcher MP and Magenta Community Services. MC Mellissa Holzheimer, Councillor Gladstone Regional Council. And the team from Endeavour Foundation who did an amazing job with set-up and pack-down. Team DCN has had a great year but it's now time for a break to recharge the batteries so we can come back in 2026 and be a loud voice for inclusion in our region. NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US 😀

So, we have a thing. It's called the DCN InclusAbility Champion. Every year we choose an individual or organisation who has shown through their procedures, practices and policies that they value inclusion. Our InclusAbility Champion for 2025 is Mark and his team at Gladstone Airport Corporation. Well done folks 😀

Team DC were honoured to be asked by the Gladstone Youth Council for input on an accessible drinking fountain this year. The launch of this asset will be at Lions Park, Boyne Island this Saturday morning. The event is open to the community so please join the celebrations 😀

Two great meetings this week. Glenn Butcher MP on Wednesday about the Construction Code. Dee and Chloe from GAPDL yesterday about inclusive tourism. The warmth around us makes our work so worthwhile!

A big thank you to Queenslanders with Disability Network who gave us the heads-up on a proposal to wind back the Construction Code accessibility standards in Queensland. Minimum standards for accessible living (wider doorways, non-step entry, reinforced bathroom walls for the future er****on of safety rails if needed) were accepted by the Queensland Government in 2023. We are now hearing that this is having a negative impact on the productivity of our construction sector. This is not just a disability issue. There are so many parts of our community that will be impacted by such a move. Please share as the QLD Government needs to hear that this is a big backwards step!
