People often ask why the zebra is the symbol of the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and hypermobility spectrum disorders. This is why.

No two zebras have the same stripes. Every pattern is unique. And yet, when you see a zebra, you know it is a zebra.

That is exactly how EDS and HSD show up in the world. Every person’s experience is different. Symptoms vary. Systems are affected in different ways. The stripes never look identical. But there is a pattern, and when clinicians know what to look for, the zebra is unmistakable.

For too long, medicine has been taught to dismiss the zebra. The saying “when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras” has meant that people with EDS and HSD have been misdiagnosed, misunderstood, or not believed at all.

Primary care clinicians and specialists alike have often missed the pattern, even when it was right in front of them.

Our goal is simple. We want to reach a point where every doctor, in every discipline, especially in primary care, can recognise the zebra. Where they understand that when certain patterns present, EDS or HSD must be considered. Where lived experience is valued, red flags are connected, and people are guided toward answers rather than left searching for years.

Tomorrow, on the International Day of the Zebra, we stand together as a dazzle. A community defined not by sameness, but by shared strength, resilience, and purpose.

Just as zebras survive by staying together, our community supports one another through complex, often invisible conditions. Together, we advocate for better education, stronger research, earlier diagnosis, and care that reflects the realities of our lives.

We are also looking ahead with determination and hope. Through the road to 2026 and the work toward updated criteria, we are building a future where recognition improves, patterns are better understood, and fewer people are missed. A future where seeing the zebra becomes instinct, not exception.

Every zebra’s stripes are different. But when we stand together, we are unmistakable.

Hello from Dr Barb.
I’m not usually one for making public posts about private issues, however I am very aware my private issues are impacting many of my patients who are waiting for answers or appointments.
So I’ve decided to make a public update.
I was discharged from Rockhampton Hospital yesterday afternoon after being admitted to hospital on Thursday 8 January.
During that time I was too unwell to log in and do my usual housekeeping on letters and results, trusting instead that the system would flag the most urgent issues and my colleagues would deal with those for you.
I can now say that not only have I lived experience of Crohn’s disease and MCAS, I can now add POTS, medical trauma and medical gaslighting to my trove.
30 years ago, when I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, I overheard a family member say that it would make me a better doctor. I do know that my patients have also very much been my teachers, and I am thankful that I learned so much from my dazzle of Zebras, which allowed me to (try) to advocate for myself during my recent admission.
You guys rock. Know that I haven’t forgotten you all, but I need to take time to heal before I can return to caring for you.
Don’t forget first principles- nutrition and fluid, rest, sleep, sunshine, connection…. And salt for the Zebras.
Appropriately prescribed medications help, too, but they need something to work with.
I’ll be seeing you round like a rissole,

Dr Barb.

Beautifully written advocacy- Emily is not alone in her experience of POTS, and the medical community has a long way to go before we “think Zebras”. However, there is a growing group of (mostly) young people who meet regularly at Tondoon Botanic Gardens, to share experiences and resources.

Emily, from Gladstone, QLD, Bailai, Gurang, Gooreng Gooreng, and Taribelang Bunda Country.

Once a Guide, always a Guide….. my early training as a Guide stood me in good stead to manage the years of learning in Medicine. They are a wonderful not for profit organisation and need some help at the moment.

Please keep an eye out for the Girl Guide fundraiser as they recover from an Arson attack at the Dawson Highway hut.

Dietary management is an integral part of many health issues.
The message I keep coming back to is about ultra processed food - it has potential to harm us on so many levels, through affecting blood sugar, gut mucus barrier, gut microbiome, immune system stimulation and brain chemistry effects.

I’m visiting Brisbane this weekend to participate in The Ehlers Danlos Society TEAMWORK Global Learning Conference.

Such a message of hope for people, mostly women, who live with hypermobility and the associated co-morbidities of POTS, MCAS and fatigue.

I’ve learned so much, especially from the allied health professionals who presented over the weekend. So much to get my head around as I bring what I am learning back to Gladstone to share with my Dazzle of Zebras, and hopefully the fantastic allied health team who work with them.

There is some new research that tells us the human gut microbiome (tiny, microscopic organisms that live in our gut) may affect how well you can control your blood sugar levels. We are wanting to test whether changing what we eat and drink to improve gut health, can improve women's risk of developin...
