How did Your child do in Naplan?

My Child is Refusing to go to School... Could it be from Irlen Syndrome?

Our clinic sees a lot of children who are constantly trying to avoid going to school as much as possible simply due to the fact that the classroom is too bright making it difficult for them to do their school work.
They might go to school but they take a long time to get ready, or get out of the car because it is just too hard and uncomfortable for them at school. So everyday is a battle for mum or dad trying to get them to school.
These children may spend a considerable amount of time in the sick bay as well, complaining of headaches or nausea. Sometimes they really do feel unwell but sometimes it is to avoid doing the difficult tasks such as reading or writing stories or even a spelling test or quiz.
Some of these children experience daily headaches, get extremely tired at school and just can't see the words clearly enough to do their reading and writing. They start to feel that school is just a waste of time because no matter how hard they try, they just can't seem to improve.

So if you have a child who is refusing school, reluctant to attend or spending lots of time in the sick bay, it may be worth an assessment for Irlen Syndrome. It is a simple, inexpensive one hour appointment but it just might be the most significant hour in your child's school life.

Victor has been returning to the Krist Irlen Clinic (Houston/Galveston), to check his Irlen color, whenever he needs a new Rx. The color is designed to filter light waves in order to process light correctly and eliminate distortions. He is now a successful college student studying a major in Financial Planning – something he attributes to wearing Irlen Glasses.

DOES YOUR CHILD BLINK A LOT IN BRIGHT LIGHTS? A young client like this, was blinking excessively. When we was presented with print on coloured paper, and with no prompting, said, "I'm not blinking as much, I don't know why". Of course, we knew why! White paper hurts his eyes!

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN VISUAL PERCEPTION AND READING DIFFICULTIES OR DYSLEXIA.
For years there has been an argument put forth that reading difficulties or dyslexia have no direct link to vision or visual perception.
However there has been research done back in 2017 in Turkey which shows a direct connection between difficulties in visual perception and difficulties in reading.https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1147376.pdf
The International Dyslexia Association itself has also been looking into these same connections as far back as 2016, and again found a link between children adults with poor visuospatial awareness and dyslexia.

As they agree and believe more work needs to be done to determine how to treat these deficits to improve visuospatial awareness and therefore improve reading, there is a treatment already available.
Irlen Spectral Filters worn as glasses calm the visual cortex, improve visual perception and therefore improve reading in those with reading difficulties and some diagnosed as being dyslexic.
