๐Ÿ”Ž Let's play a game of I Spy! Can you spot all of the items in the rhyme? ๐Ÿ‘€

I spy with my little eye:
A colourful caterpillar perched up high

A round, green mat on the floor
One coloured bell and then three more

A big, flat, round gathering drum
And a brown guitar that you can strum

A tiny orange cow and a small blue chair
Egg shakers and maracas, each in a pair

A little blue tambourine with a yellow star
Wind chimes poking out from behind a guitar

Nine instrument pictures stuck on the wall
Two wooden djembe drums standing tall

Two big posters and a golden kazoo
And one music therapist waving at you!

๐Ÿ”ฆ Instrument Spotlight: Accordion ๐Ÿช—

This instrument is a favourite among our participants! Not only is it fun to play, and to hear its unique sound, but it is a fantastic tool for working on motor skills ๐ŸŽถโœ‹๐Ÿผ

Some examples of why this works:
โ€ข pressing the buttons requires fine motor skills
โ€ข pulling and pushing the bellows open and closed uses gross motor skills and strength
โ€ข using both hands at once to play a single instrument targets bilateral coordination

We love the way the accordion provides a workout for your fingers, arms and brain all at once! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐Ÿง

In Music Therapy, we prefer to sing our greetings! ๐ŸŽค๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ

Hereโ€™s a goodbye song that Jess uses at the end of a lot of her sessions. This is an extra special greeting song as it was written in collaboration with a very creative young client ๐Ÿ“๐ŸŽ‰

Greeting songs are more than just a fun way to start and end sessions. Through these songs, participants can:
- Learn social skills by singing with, and greeting, the therapist
- Understand language and communication structures
- Express their feelings by singing fill-in-the-blanks, allowing the therapist to understand and support their needs
- Develop their fine and gross motor skills by playing instruments or doing actions in the songs
- Be supported through transitions by knowing what to expect and being able to prepare, either to start their session, or to leave and go home, to school, etc.

A quick snap between setting up for the session and greeting the participant ๐Ÿ“ธ

๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿฅ What you see:
โ€ข cozy cushions
โ€ข balance board
โ€ข colourful instruments
โ€ข numbered bean bags
โ€ข a guitar

๐Ÿ“๐ŸŽธ What the therapist planned:
โ€ข various seating options for sensory input and regulation
โ€ข small percussion instruments to improve fine motor skills through songs and musical activities
โ€ข bean bags and a drum target to develop coordination in a musical throwing and catching activity
โ€ข opportunity for cognitive development by following actions in songs, matching colours and numbers, and completing lyrics while singing together

๐Ÿ”Ž๐Ÿ”” What else can you see? Bonus points for anyone who can spot the easter egg ๐Ÿคญ

New year, new signage! ๐Ÿ“ฃ๐Ÿชงโœจ

Can you believe itโ€™s February already?! We hope our participants and followers have had a good start to the year as theyโ€™ve settled back into their school and/or work routines ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป

We have enjoyed seeing our participants as theyโ€™ve resumed sessions over the last few weeks, hearing about what they got up to on their holidays and making more music together! ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿช‡๐ŸŽธ

For any new visitors to our office, it should be easier than ever to find the entrance at the back of the building, with new and refreshed signage on the street front, in the carpark, and at our door ๐Ÿšชโฌ…๏ธ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ

From yesterday, Monday 24th November, the price reduction for Music Therapy in the NDIS came into effect. This service will now be charged at an hourly rate of $156.16 for NDIS-funded participants.

Music Therapy is still an approved NDIS-funded support, under the โ€œCapacity Building - Improved Daily Livingโ€ category, as long as the service is delivered by a Registered Music Therapist with the AMTA. For more information about recent pricing changes and registration requirements, factsheets are available on the NDIS website.

๐Ÿ”ฆ Instrument Spotlight: Ukulele! ๐ŸŽธ

The ukulele is another fan favourite in music therapy! Perfectly sized for children, who make up most of our current clientele, we as therapists also love them for their portability. Being lightweight makes them accessible for kids, and for participants of any age who may find it difficult to lift or hold heavier instruments. This makes the ukulele a great alternative to a full sized guitar, while being able to hone the same skills.

Using multiple fingers to create a chord shape or press the string to play a melody allows participants to work on their fine motor skills. Having to strum with the other hand also benefits bilateral movements and bihemispheric brain functioning. As it requires concentration to use both hands at once, various cognitive skills are also developed by playing the ukulele, such as attention, learning, memory, organisation and planning.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA). Celebration is taking place at the conference in Melbourne this week, as well as on the AMTA website and socials!

AMTA invites you - whether you are a music therapy client, a caregiver, a fellow health professional or a friend and advocate of music therapy - to submit your memories and stories of your experiences of music therapy. See the website (link in comments) to submit, or to explore the meaningful moments that have already been submitted through pictures and stories, in reflection of the rich history of Music Therapy in Australia.

๐Ÿ“ฃ We have moved! ๐Ÿ“ฃ

Over the school holidays, Eliza prepared to go on a break for a while, and Jess set up her new space, getting ready to go solo in the meantime ๐Ÿคฉ

The new office has been up and running for about two weeks now. Signage is yet to be finalised, but that hasnโ€™t stopped the music! ๐ŸŽถ

Itโ€™s been exciting, and (letโ€™s be honest) a bit scary - for some participants AND for Jess. But we are loving the fresh space, as well as the familiar instruments and the new ones ๐Ÿฅ

And weโ€™re really looking forward to settling in and rocking out during term 4 ๐ŸŽธ

18/09/2025

On Wednesday the 10th of September, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) released the report of the Independent Review of Music and Art Therapy in the NDIS, led by Dr Stephen Duckett. The NDIA and AMTA have also shared responses.

POSITIVE OUTCOMES:
โ€ข Music therapy is retained as a funded therapeutic support under the NDIS
โ€ข Only AMTA-registered music therapists can deliver music therapy services in the NDIS
โ€ข This recognition aligns music therapy with other allied health professions (e.g. speech pathology and dietetics), underscoring the professionโ€™s standards and clinical expertise

CONCERNS FOR THE MUSIC THERAPY PROFESSION:
โ€ข Pricing cuts were announced by the NDIA upon publication of Dr Duckettโ€™s report. The maximum hourly rate will be reduced from $193.99/hour to $156.16/hour, effective from the 24th of November
โ€ข This 20% reduction will make it very difficult for many services to remain viable. The Music and Art Therapy communities are concerned that participants may lose access to these supports when clinics are forced to close

The AMTA is committed to continued advocacy and constructive communication with government bodies to ensure participants can continue to access the supports they need.

For more information about the Independent Review, and to read the full or summarised Duckett Report, as well as the NDIA's response, please visit the link in the comments. To read the Australian Music Therapy Association's response, please see their website or visit their social media pages.
