I’m presenting a Key Word Sign workshop on 2nd November with the lovely Heather from Port Curtis Speech Pathology.

The workshop is open to anyone, and NDIS funding can be used for self and plan managed participants.

Key word sign is great for:
💫 gesture is easier than speech so can be useful for children to get their message across
💫 helps increase comprehension of instructions by providing a visual model
💫 can reduce frustration for children having difficulty being understood
And lots more ❤️

Ep10 is here! 🥳 Loved this chat with my good mate ! Kerrie’s younger son had some ear issues when he was little and needed a little support with speech therapy, working on /s/ and /k/. So I asked her to come and chat about her experience 🤩

This little chat is to support parents to realise that speech therapy isn’t scary, and doesn’t need to be a “last resort” ❤️

Episode 9 coming to your ear holes ❤️

This one is all about what to look out for if you think your child might have a hearing loss (HINT: the newborn hearing screen only checks for moderate to severe hearing loss!) and some tips for what to do in the meantime.

Did you know that doing this 👆(curling your tongue around in a “taco” so the lateral sides are raised) is not just genetic?!

Apart from looking super cool 😉 you want to be able to do a taco because it means your tongue has the strength and functional ability to move food around in your mouth efficiently, and reach the correct places in your mouth for articulating sounds. It also helps with nasal breathing which can improve your sleep quality!

So if your child can’t “taco,” they might have some underlying functional difficulties which could be causing picky eating and speech sound errors.

Some snaps from the last week ☀️

I’ve just come back from attending training by all about Orofacial Myology.

Going in, I’d heard great things but was a little skeptical about how this was different to NSOMES (non speech oromotor exercises). WOW was my skepticism challenged and completely turned around 🤩

Orofacial myology assesses the structures and functions of your oral and facial musculature, and then seeks to correct suboptimal function. It can help correct disordered or dysfunctional breathing, posture, sleeping, eating and talking.

I also got to see some beautiful sights in Townsville 😍

Biggest thing I learnt?? Make sure you’re always breathing through your nose with your tongue against the alveolar ridge (just behind top teeth) ✅

Episode 8 is here ❤️

This is very close to my heart as it’s the topic of the last 5 years of my (almost finished!!) PhD research.

Hearing is so important for speech and language, and yet in Australia there’s no national approach to hearing assessment beyond the newborn hearing screen (which shouldn’t be your child’s only hearing assessment btw!)

Listen in if any of this is making sense to you 🙏🏻

Episode 7 of my “looking after us” podcast is here! I loved this chat so much ❤️ I spoke with who has been on an 11 year journey with her son who has food phobia.

There are so many key messages from Raylene about finding your “people” and never giving up. Thankyou so much Raylene 😍
