Centre for Safe Air

Centre for Safe Air The Centre for Safe Air is a Centre for Research Excellence funded by the NHMRC.

Our vision is for a healthier community through cleaner air, underpinned by evidence-informed policy and practice. The Centre for Air quality and health Research and evaluation (CAR) is a Centre of Research Excellence funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council. CAR will enable research on the impact of air pollution on human health and translate that research into contributions to policy that aims to mitigate that impact. CAR will create opportunities for researchers, operating in diverse but related disciplines, to create and apply knowledge about air pollution and health of both national and international interest.

The Centre for Safe Air and Asthma Australia have released a new resource, the Bushfire Smoke Asthma Plan, to help people with asthma stay safer during smoke events.

It offers simple steps for preparing before smoke arrives, protecting your health during poor air quality, and recovering once conditions improve. Download the plan: https://safeair.org.au/bushfire-smoke-asthma-plan/

Asthma Australia and the Centre for Safe Air have partnered to develop a new Bushfire Smoke Asthma Plan, designed to help people with asthma stay safe during smoke events - download here: https://buff.ly/hUyxaXu

Adapted from the Centre’s Bushfire Smoke Health Plan, the new resource provides practical, easy to follow steps for preparing before smoke arrives, protecting health during poor air quality, and recovering once conditions improve.

The plan includes guidance on monitoring air quality, managing asthma medicines, creating a clean air space at home, using masks and air purifiers, and recognising when to seek medical help. It also supports people to think ahead, reduce stress, and plan for future smoke events.

This collaboration aims to give individuals and families a simple, personalised tool to reduce the health impacts of bushfire smoke - especially for those with asthma or other vulnerabilities.@

The Centre for Safe Air, HEAL Network and ARC THRIVE have released a joint submission calling for a staged, evidence based approach to clean indoor air in NSW.
🏢🏠 With Australians spending 90% of their time indoors, unregulated indoor air poses a major risk—but solutions are affordable, effective, and offer excellent return on investment.
🧐Read the full submission here: https://safeair.org.au/nsw-clean-indoor-air-inquiry/

Australians spend 90% of their time indoors, yet air quality in public buildings remains largely unregulated and rarely monitored.

Our thoughts are with everyone in Victoria impacted by the bushfires. With very poor air quality across many parts of the state, it is important to know your risk and take steps to protect your health. New research from the Centre for Safe Air shows simple measures can protect health during smoke events. 😷🔥💨

Collaborators from HEAL and the Centre for Safe Air found that surgical masks, while less effective at filtering smoke, still had a positive benefit to cost ratio along with P2/N95 masks and portable air cleaners with HEPA filters. All options provide health benefits that outweigh their costs—making them valuable tools for reducing PM₂.₅ exposure during bushfires and wood heating seasons. 🔗 Read more here

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution related to biomass combustion is an established driver of poor health outcomes. While interventions such as face masks and portable air cleaners (PACs) reduce exposure, the health benefits and cost effectiveness of these interventions are not well understood...
