Breast implant removal, or explant surgery, can be performed for many reasons — from addressing complications to simply choosing not to have implants. Dr Kernohan can remove implants and, if desired, combine the procedure with a breast lift or fat transfer to restore natural shape and volume.

Some women undergo explant surgery due to health concerns, while others simply no longer want implants. Understanding the process, potential risks, and outcomes is key to making an informed decision.

Common reasons for breast implant removal include:
✔️ Drooping breasts after weight changes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or gravity
✔️ Neck, back, or shoulder pain from larger implants
✔️ Concerns about BIA-ALCL
✔️ Ruptured or damaged implants
✔️ Health issues potentially linked to implants
✔️ Implants shifting or moving

If you’re considering explant surgery, discussing your options and goals with Dr Kernohan is the first step toward the right decision for you.

Is a Deep Plane Facelift Right for You?

Deep Plane Facelift surgery is a highly customised approach that targets deeper facial structures to achieve natural and longer-lasting results. However, it’s not suitable for everyone.

Suitability depends on your facial anatomy, health, and individual goals. This procedure may be appropriate if you experience loose midface skin, deeper creases from the nose to the mouth, and are in good general health with realistic expectations.

An in-depth consultation allows Dr Kernohan to tailor a treatment plan that aligns with your features and desired outcomes.

I’ve spent years helping patients through reconstructive and aesthetic surgery — but my journey into plastic surgery started long before that. Here’s what drew me to this field and why I’ve never looked back.

What is breast augmentation and could it be right for you?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that can enhance, restore, or reshape the breasts. For some women, it’s about increasing size or volume. For others, it helps restore symmetry or firmness after pregnancy, weight loss, or surgery.

Not all breast implants are the same—there are different shapes, sizes, textures, and fillings to suit individual needs. The procedure can offer potential benefits such as improved breast contour, increased volume, and enhanced symmetry.

Swipe through to learn more about the different types of implants, the benefits, and what you can expect from a consultation with Dr Kernohan.

Plastic Surgeon vs Cosmetic Surgeon: Why It Matters

It’s a common question — and one that matters when choosing who to trust.

A Plastic Surgeon completes 12+ years of medical and surgical training, including at least 5 years of accredited specialist training, giving them the expertise to safely manage reconstructive and cosmetic procedures.

A Cosmetic Surgeon is not a recognised specialist. They may be a GP, dermatologist, or general surgeon who trained in cosmetic procedures through short courses or fellowships, sometimes just weekends.

Board Certification is key: Plastic surgeons are certified by RACS and often members of ASPS. Cosmetic surgeons’ certifications, such as ACCS, are not recognised by the Medical Board of Australia.

All surgery carries risk. Choosing a trained specialist reduces complications and ensures safe, ethical care.

As a Plastic, Reconstructive, and Cosmetic Surgeon (FRACS), my practice prioritises patient safety, long-term outcomes, and informed decisions.

At the heart of my practice, patient safety is never an afterthought—it’s a cornerstone of everything we do. From the moment a patient enters our clinic to the care we provide inside and outside the theatre, every procedure is guided by strict protocols, rigorous checks, and meticulous attention to detail.

This approach aligns with the principles of World Patient Safety Day, observed annually on 17 September, which calls on healthcare teams, patients, and communities worldwide to come together in a shared commitment to patient safety. Every action we take reflects this commitment—because your safety is, and always will be, our priority.
