As temperatures rise, it's important to be mindful of the increased activity of reptiles in our region, including blue tongue lizards, skinks, and snakes.

The Bunbury Geographe area is home to some venomous snakes, such as dugites and tiger snakes, and there have been recent sightings reported in Bunbury, including at Big Swamp this week.

When you're out and about, especially in or near bushland and grassy areas, please exercise caution. To reduce the risk of being bitten, it's advisable to wear suitable clothing, such as long pants and covered shoes, when going for a bushwalk.

If you encounter a snake, it's crucial not to approach it, as most bites occur when people inadvertently step on them or attempt to handle or remove them. In the event that you or someone you are with is bitten by a snake, remain calm and immediately call 000 for emergency assistance. If a snake is spotted at your home, please do not attempt to remove it yourself. Instead, contact the Parks and Wildlife Service 24-hour Wildcare Helpline at 9474 9055, and they will be able to provide the appropriate assistance.

By being aware of the presence of snakes and other reptiles in our area and taking the necessary precautions, we can enjoy the outdoors safely during this warmer time of year.
