WHAT’S YOUR REASON TO MOVE? 🧐

In the clinic, we have many conversations with patients about their goals for treatment and injury management.

Whilst their answers might primarily focus on pain relief, we always ask more questions to understand your WHY or your emotional connection to getting better, such as:
▪️What does your normal exercise routine look like? Have you stopped or reduced this normal routine because of the injury?
▪️What is it you want to get back to doing that you currently can’t do because of your injury/pain?

In other words, is there something you’re PASSIONATE about or ENJOY doing, or is there simply an everyday task that you can’t do anymore? Maybe it’s gardening, playing with the kids, going for long walks, using stairs or riding your bike on the weekend 🚴🏿

What we aim to understand in your treatment journey is not only what is the cause of your injury, how it happened and what we can do to rehab it - but more importantly what does it mean to YOU, what does getting back to moving more freely mean to YOU, and why do you MOVE?

So we want to know - what’s your reason to move?? Let us know in the comments below!👇🏽🤩

We often do not set realistic goals or expectations. Rehabilitation of an injury is a process and often takes time. This is not always directed by pain.
Setting yourself with realistic expectations gives you a more positive outlook, which ultimately leads to better outcomes.

Front foot elevated strategy
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is a great variation to add into your workouts & rehab. For the right person at the right time, this variation allows for a greater range of motion to get the individual towards their goals. It’s also quite easy to manipulate the exercise to bias a knee dominant approach, or a hip dominant approach - again it depends on the goal
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just a reminder that we’re not open to everyone for an osteo appointment, or exercise rehab appointments. Feel free to send us a message if you need any help. Happy freedom day!

💥Our bodies are designed to move!
Just ask anyone who suffers from Arthritis. Too much rest will stiffness up their joints. But once the get moving, they free up and feel much better! 🙌.
When, stiff and inflamed tissues are moved gently and regularly in a non-aggravating way, pain may actually reduce 🤯.
Initially their may be fear around moving, as the first few movements may be painful. But finding positions of ease, and intensity is key! 🔑.
The old saying Rest is Best - is now no longer true 👎🙅

In fact quite the opposite. Pain can often become worse with immobility and delay the recovery process. 🥺

✅ Find positions and intensities that suit you and make you feel better. Regular short bouts of movement, promote blood flow!
Think of movement as your own internal can of WD-40! 🤣🤣

There is an infinite amount of exercises on the Internet. A Google search for "exercises for back “pain will produce more hits than a tiktok video 🕺🏻💃🏽
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These exercises are generic at best. They're more like a hastily compiled grocery list that was curated before you leave for the shops.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sure you can do them for the sake of movement, but when you tack on pain/ individual experiences/ beliefs/ fear then we need to be precise.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some considerations before executing an exercise would be:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How does the exercise address my performance needs?
How does it make me feel during and after?
Did it produce a change in my well being?
Is this exercise helping me towards my goal?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’re unsure of where to start, feel free to send us a message. We’re here to help! 💪🏻

💥Let's talk Back Pain FACTS💥

There is so much MIS INFOMRATION surrounding back Pain!

🥴My back is out - ❌

🥴I slipped a disc - ❌

🥴It must be sciatica - ❌

🥴 I need a scan before treatment ❌

Sadly these are comments we here all too often in the clinic.

🤓Our latest blog busts these myths. We need to start spreading FACTS and NOT fear ✅.

🤳Reach out if you have uttered these above words.

Back pain is NOT Life sentence! 🙌

M demonstrating a single leg biased exercise that is targeted towards her goal of running without any hip pain.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our focus is to work on eccentric (coming down and decelerating) while getting explosive on the concentric (pushing up and accelerating)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Assuming an uneven foot stance helps us bias her Lt leg more, and depending on different individuals goal, we can change how far her foot is relative to her body to bias more quads or more glute.

Please feel free to shoot us a message if you’re currently having some trouble with your rehab or want to get better at your sport!

At Equilibrium, we are a huge proponent of how our environment influences behaviour change. We’re a product of the circumstances, the people, and life events of yesterday.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What you want to be, what you want to do or accomplish is influenced by your environment.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The change we seek starts from within but we need behaviour change to catalyse it. Some ways to think about this are...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How are you setting up your environment for the desired outcome?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Are there behavioural nudges in place to encourage you to get after it on your down days?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Who are you surrounding yourself with? Are you levelling up together or just in the same spot?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What’s your relationship with accountability?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What can you do now to get closer to the best version of yourself?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With current lockdown restrictions, it may be hard to stay motivated but there are still so many things we can do to stay consistent and create positive habits which will carry over once restrictions end.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What are you currently doing to create a positive environment for yourself? Let us know down in the comments below 👇🏼

🧐 Today we are talking scans!
🤔 We are often asked by patients “ Maybe I should get a scan for my Low back pain?” The real truth about scans is they often don't change your treatment and management plan.
To complicate things further, they can highlight issues that are NOT related to your pain episode. 🤯.
Often people think that there will be this big red arrow pointing to the problem spot. This is rarely the case.😢.
Too often we see the same “problems” appearing in PAIN FREE people that are there in those suffering with pain! 😲.
We are not saying ALL scans are bad. Scans can be very good at ruling in our out serious problems. And should always be conducted when more sinister symptoms are at play. But getting a scan to find out WHY you are sore is just not a wise decision.🙌.
Here are few things to consider:
✅ Discs DONT slip. They never have and never will.
✅ Your disc CAN heal.
✅ They are NOT soft and squishy. But rather a STRONG and robust tissue.
✅ The RIGHT exercise at the RIGHT time can be VERY helpful and often provide a great source of pain relief.
Thanks to for the graphs. - also wishing him a speedy recovery with his most recent episode of back pain!
