How can you accurately predict the weight of your unborn baby?

📸

We know that ultrasound measurements have a +/- margin of 15% error.
This means your baby could weigh anywhere between 85% and 115% of the estimated fetal weight (EFW) -- that's if they fall into that weight range at all.

We also know that only 81% of scans carried out between 34 and 37 weeks gestation fell within that accepted 15% margin of error.
With less than a third getting as close as 2%.

Considering how many recommendations are made, how many interventions are pushed as necessary, and how many "big babies" are blamed, based almost purely on EFW, it's a little concerning how inaccurate that data is.

So, how can we accurately predict bub's weight?
Place them on a scale once they are born.

You may (or may not) be surprised to learn that how your birth ends up actually has a lot to do with things that you do or don't do before you go into labour or before you ever step foot in a hospital.
The decisions you make and the things you consent or decline during your pregnancy can significantly contribute to your birth experience.

Picture this

You are 26 weeks pregnant. You have a gestational diabetes test.
Test indicates that you do in fact have GD but you are told it is diet controlled.
You were planning on a homebirth through your hospital homebirth program but now have been told due to the GD you are no longer eligible due to being high risk.

You have a 30 week scan and are told your baby is measuring big. Talk of induction begins but you mention you would like to have spontaneous labour.

You're 37 weeks. Your OB has again suggested that you're measuring big and again suggests induction. You say that your GD is diet managed and that you would like to wait for spontaneous labour.

You are 40 weeks. You meet with your OB who tells you she is concerned your baby is too big and won't fit. Your baby might get stuck or you may be unable to push your baby out. She tells you that now you're 40 weeks your placenta is beginning to deteriorate and soon baby will have no room. Still not wanting an induction, you compromise and agree to have a stretch and sweep to see if you can "naturally" bring on labour. You experience some painful cramping but no signs of labour.

You're 40+4 and you're told that it is dangerous to keep baby in there. You're now over due and there's no reason baby should stay in there. Sometimes people just don't go into spontaneous labour and you might be one of them. You don't want to put your baby at risk and you would prefer to have an induction than a dead baby, right?
You agree to having your membranes artificially ruptured and waiting to see if labour begins spontaneously from then on.
Unfortunately, your labour does not start naturally. Synthetic oxytocin is administered to help with contractions.

We wouldn’t take an undercooked cake out of the oven.
Why are we kicking underdeveloped babies out of the womb?

Why are we following guidelines established 200 years ago instead of following God’s wise design for physiological reproduction that has withstood the test of time for thousands of years?

Do we know when the body has the perfect hormonal cocktail ready to start and finish the birthing process safely?

Yes, you are eager to meet your baby. The last few weeks of pregnancy is the hardest waiting period.
But the last few weeks are also crucial to your baby’s development to survive out of the womb.

Yes, you could kick your baby out earlier, but that doesn’t guarantee that they will be able to stay in your arms immediately after birth.

Your baby will never stay inside your womb without purpose.

If you could trust your body to conceive your baby and grow your baby, then trust that it knows the perfect time for your baby to come.

It is of utmost importance to your body to protect your baby while they are in the womb. This doesn’t change at any point in your pregnancy.

Physiology knows no deadlines.

✨✨Surrender Mumma, There is no need to fight your body, there is no need for tension, release and let go and trust in that innate wisdom. Go to that place of power and surrender to it, welcome it, because that power is you and you are birthing your baby like a goddess✨✨

And return to this world together 💕

There is no such thing as risk-free.

If a provider tells you that you must follow a recommendation they've made because the alternative is "too risky", that's a subjective statement and it means you need to ask more questions.

One person's "too risky" is another person's "pretty safe".

Only you can know what risks are acceptable to you, and so to make an informed decision, you need the objective information.

It is your legal and human right to refuse treatment or recommendations made by care providers, even when doing so will risk harm to you or your baby.

I tend to find most mothers aren't interested in harming their babies anyway, but are concerned with the lack of evidence that sometimes informs the recommendations made to them. But regardless - even if there is guaranteed harm to you or your baby, it is still YOUR body. No one can do anything to you that you do not want.

Ask questions, understand the objective risks, make informed decisions that you know you can stand by.

✨This is because the experience of giving birth is a deeply emotional and transformative one for a woman. It is a moment of intense vulnerability and strength, as she brings new life into the world and becomes a mother.

The way a woman is treated during childbirth can have a profound impact on her sense of self-worth, confidence, and trust in others. If she is treated with respect, kindness, and compassion, she is more likely to feel empowered and supported in her role as a mother.

However, if she is subjected to coercion, disrespect, or mistreatment, she may feel traumatised and disempowered, which can have lasting effects on her mental and emotional well-being.

Therefore, it is important for healthcare providers to prioritise respectful and compassionate care during childbirth, not only for the physical health of the mother and baby but also for their emotional and psychological well-being.

If you don’t walk out of every appointment with your midwife or OB feeling fully supported, heard and respected then book into one of birth coaching sessions so I can help you understand your options or approach your caregivers.

🚩 So many women are shocked to hear you don’t have to have a cervical exam if you don’t want to. No matter how your care giver “asks” you never have to have one. Maybe if there is a concern or a rare circumstance where having this information is important. However for most women they do not need one. Know one can predict how long until your baby arrives and having someone tell you “your only 2cm” and proceeding with “you have hours to to go” isn’t just the most disheartening thing you can during hear labour but also completely untrue, uneducated and not evidence based. The idea of not being able to bear down/birth your baby before your car giver sticks there fingers in you to “check” you can start birthing is absolutely ludicrous and horrific care. Your cervix is not a crystal ball. It can tell you where you are but nothing else. Your baby could be hours away yes or just minutes. I recommend to all women to have this conversation with your care giver before labour and finding out there thoughts and if there care giver insist on routine cervical exams for every women why that is. Knowledge is power! And when you learn you can learn to spot those red flags 🚩 🚩 🚩

✧The double hip squeeze✧

During your labour, you may experience intense pressure on your sacrum. The double hip squeeze helps to relieve this pressure and can allow more wriggle room for your baby to move down.

During the hypnobirthing classes we will practice various labour positions and coping strategies, such as this one, to ensure you have all the tools you need for a positive birth.

Inductions for medical reasons can be epic and some people find inductions for non medical reasons epic too ♥️

And many don’t.

As always, it’s not about saying no to everything, it’s about understanding why you are saying yes and ensuring it’s a full body yes! (There’s a big difference between a good girl yes and a full body yes, I’ll give you a hint, one’s a no 😉♥️).

Some of the most interesting info coming from research around induction is that families weren’t aware of all that it involved and had they have known what it did, many would make the same choices again (whilst others would - were all so different! This is why choice is the key!).

I see this reflected in the birth debrief sessions I offer as well. So much trauma can be avoided by being informed.

Which is why and I talk all things induction research with .dahlen - the lead researcher on this study.

The study quoted in this post is
“Intrapartum interventions and outcomes for women and children following induction of labour at term in uncomplicated pregnancies: a 16 year population based linked data study.” By Dahlen et al., 2021.

It’s open access which means anyone can read it for free. It’s also been written up as an epic Conversation article “too many healthy women are having labour induced for no identified medical reason, our study shows” published June 1, 2021.

And if you haven’t yet accessed my FREE antenatal classes - get on them! Link is in the bio.

If you find this post triggering, sending you a lot of love. If you feel like you may like a birth debrief, I offer those under the services tab on my website.

Big big love team and thank you to those who share the wisdom widely ♥️

💗 Introducing siblings and growing your family 💗

Who here is feeling overwhelmed about this?
Or even the idea of this? Or thinking about age gaps and what’s right for your family?
ITS A LOT… 🫠 Especially when your still learning about your baby, toddler or the primary school phase. We are constantly learning, juggling and adapting to these little people we have created and there needs. The answer is… There is no right answer!
If some one had told me 15yrs ago that I would have four children 5,3,2 and 0 I would of never believed it. I still kinda don’t.. it’s been a blur to be perfectly honest. it’s a whole lot of “release and let go” 😉

When the time is right for you and your family thats the right time, there’s no magic age gap, there there will be a right time. You may feel like your whole world is revolving around just one little person right now and you can’t imagine adding another one. But I promise just as you have adapted and changed so will they. Juggling a toddler with a newborn is HARD but so is a newborn and a primary school aged child, it’s all HARD but it’s all so worth it. The days are oh so long! But the years are scary short… I remember hearing this in the thick of motherhood and rolled my eyes. Now I have a 12,10,8 and 6yr old 😭
