Welcome Dr Gemma McQuillan
MB BAO FRACGP General Practitioner

We’re so happy to welcome Dr Gemma McQuillan to the Thrive team from 30 July.

Originally from Northern Ireland, Gemma moved to Australia in 2012 and has worked across a wide range of specialties before finding her home in general practice. She has recently relocated to Adelaide with her young family and brings a warm, thoughtful approach to care.

Gemma has a particular interest in paediatrics and kids' health, which means she will be helping look after the little ones in our extended Thrive family. We know how often kids need to be seen at short notice, and we're glad to have her on board.

She also has a strong interest in women's health, chronic disease, and menopause care. Gemma is a member of the Australian Menopause Society and is currently completing a Graduate Diploma in Child Health.

Outside of work, she loves spending time with her two young boys and their Labrador, exploring nature and making the most of family life.

Gemma is currently available for existing Thrive patients only. You can book online via hotdoc ❤️

Dr Alecia chatting through our model of shared medical appointments with Australian Doctor magazine.

Shared Medical Appointments aren’t a new model, and definitely have a place in complex issues where lots of time is needed.

Such a rare treat to have this many of the Adelaide endo clinical crew actually in the same place at once—our four Thrive Endo GPs, pelvic physios Alycia Scannell and Carolyn Berry, and gynaecologists Dr Tran Nguyen, Dr Anna Nicholson and Dr Preetam Ganu—all at the World Congress on Endometriosis.

Usually we’re scattered across town… so getting to nerd out together in real life? A total joy. Big brains, big hearts, and a shared love for doing endo care differently.

This week, Dr Alecia Macrow had the privilege of presenting alongside the brilliant Professor Louise Hull to a group of dedicated women’s health GPs in Adelaide.

Professor Hull is a reproductive medicine specialist, gynaecologist, and researcher at the University of Adelaide. She leads the Endometriosis Research Group at the Robinson Research Institute and is internationally recognised for her work in fertility and endometriosis. Her depth of knowledge and clarity in complex areas made for an incredibly rich and thought-provoking session.

Alecia’s presentation adopted a systems-based approach – zooming out from individual symptoms to consider the whole person and the interconnected systems that contribute to pelvic pain. Gut, bladder, and pelvic floor dynamics, trauma, neurodivergence, healthcare access, and the role of lifestyle factors were all on the table.

Her mission? Making the invisible visible. Helping GPs recognise what’s often missed – and feel more confident holding space for complexity.

“Pelvic pain doesn’t sit neatly in a box – and neither should our approach to care. The more we understand the full picture, the better we can support the people living it.”

We’re so proud to see Thrive’s work shared in this kind of collaborative, hopeful space – where evidence, experience, and compassion come together to improve outcomes for our patients.

Menopause: What the f*ck?

Honestly, a fair question.

We’re very excited that Thrive’s women’s health service is expanding soon to include in-depth perimenopause and menopause assessments and treatments—because hot flashes and night sweats are just the tip of the iceberg. We’re talking brain health, bone health, heart health, and actually feeling good through this tricky time.

More details coming soon… but in the meantime, solidarity to everyone out there navigating the WTF moments.

Always loving the opportunity to discuss quality primary care and women’s health with our decision makers 🎗️💝. Thanks for sharing your story Margi and thanks for your time Louise Miller-Frost MP Senator Marielle Smith
RACGP Dr Elaine Leung Alecia Macrow xx

Recently, Senator Marielle Smith and I spoke with Margi, a woman with endometriosis who, for most of her life, had her symptoms overlooked and ignored by medical professionals.

That was until she attended Thrive Family Practice, where she began receiving the help she so desperately needed.

Margi's story is not an isolated incident, but with the Albanese Labor Government's investment in treating endometriosis and pelvic pain, we hope to ensure all people in similar circumstances receive the care they deserve.

Thrive Family Practice, located right here in Boothby, is one of 22 endometriosis and pelvic pain clinics opened across the country.

Thank you again Margi, for sharing your story, it's reassuring to know this governments record investments in health are helping.

Dr. Alecia Macrow has been featured in The Advertiser as one of South Australia’s entrepreneurs changing the country.

It’s a nice recognition of the work we’re doing at Thrive—reimagining healthcare to be proactive, patient-centered, and holistic. From leading-edge care in endometriosis and pelvic pain to our focus on lifestyle medicine, we’re proving that primary care can be innovative, evidence-based, and deeply compassionate.

We’re proud of what we’re building and grateful for the team and community that make it possible. Change happens one patient, one conversation, one idea at a time.

Dr. Macrow just recorded a live episode of This Medical Life on osteoporosis – a preventable disease that doesn’t get talked about enough.

The episode covers the power of lifestyle choices – sunshine, diet, and lifting heavy – and why early screening matters.

Do you know your bone density? It’s worth asking. Starting the conversation early with your GP could make all the difference.

Great panel:

• Steve Davis (TML Co-host)
• Dr. Travis Brown (Pathologist & TML Co-host)
• Dr. Nick Kasmeridis (Endocrinologist)
• Dr. Steve Soukoulis (Periodontist)
• Dr. Alecia Macrow (Women’s Health and Lifestyle GP)

Episode drops next Tuesday, March 4.

Great News for Women’s Health! ✨

The Medicare rebate for Mirena IUD insertions has significantly increased. This better reflects the time, skill, and resources needed for the procedure—costs that were previously carried by women.

While the Mirena isn’t for everyone, it can be a game changer for managing conditions like endometriosis. 💜

When I met with last year, he asked for ‘homework’ on what it actually costs to insert a Mirena—I was glad to share insights from real practice. It’s wonderful to see that women and the (often female) practitioners who care for them are being listened to. 🙌

A big step forward for women’s health! Louise Miller-Frost MP
