Understanding IVF Success: What Does “Pregnancies per Treatment Attempt” Mean?

This measure uses the most recent data (2024) to look at the chance of achieving a clinical pregnancy each time an IVF treatment attempt is started with the intention of transferring an embryo. It includes both fresh and frozen embryo transfers.

While it doesn't measure births (as that data is not yet available), this measure provides an important early indicator of a clinic's results.

At Flinders Fertility, independent data shows pregnancy rates above national averages across all age groups:

• 47% pregnancy rate for women under 35, compared with 41% nationally
• 40% for women aged 35–38, compared with 35% nationally
• 26% for women aged 39–42, compared with 25% nationally

Understanding IVF Success: What Does “Births per Embryo Transferred” Mean?

This measure looks at the chance that each individual embryo — fresh or frozen — results in a live birth.

Why is this measure important?
Because it reflects the quality of embryo selection, laboratory science, and transfer timing, it also supports safer IVF practices by encouraging single embryo transfer, which reduces the risk of twins or triplets. While transferring more than one embryo might seem like it increases the chance of pregnancy, it also increases the risk of serious complications for both mothers and babies. This measure ensures clinics are recognised for achieving strong outcomes without increasing risk.

At Flinders Fertility, independent data shows strong results across all age groups:
• 45% chance of a live birth per embryo transferred for women under 35, compared with 37% nationally
• 41% for women aged 35–38, compared with 31% nationally
• 24% for women aged 39–42, compared with 19% nationally

Understanding IVF Success: What Does “Births per Individual Treatment Attempt” Tell You?

This measure looks at the chance of a live birth from each treatment performed in one year where an embryo transfer was intended. It allows fair comparisons between clinics, regardless of whether fresh or frozen embryos are used, and reflects the effectiveness of treatment planning, embryo selection, and clinical care for each attempt.

Sometimes, no embryo transfer procedure takes place because the IVF treatment is cancelled before egg retrieval or suitable embryos are not available. Any cycles where the treatment is cancelled, or all eggs or embryos were frozen for later use, are not considered individual treatment attempts.

At Flinders Fertility, independent data shows strong results across all age groups:
• 41% chance of a live birth per treatment attempt for women under 35, compared with 34% nationally
• 34% for women aged 35–38, compared with 28% nationally
• 21% for women aged 39–42, compared with 17% nationally

Understanding IVF Success: What Are the Chances on Your Very First IVF Cycle?

If you’re new to IVF, one of the most important success measures to look at is “births per complete egg retrieval cycle for women having their first ever retrieval.”

This measure focuses only on women having their very first IVF egg collection, and looks at the overall chance of having a baby from everything that comes from that one cycle — including both fresh and frozen embryo transfers.

Why does this matter?
Because IVF doesn’t end with one embryo transfer. From a single egg collection, multiple embryos may be created and transferred over time, sometimes across many months. This measure captures the full outcome of that first IVF journey, rather than just one step along the way.

It’s also helpful because it allows fairer comparisons between clinics, by looking only at patients starting IVF for the first time as some clinics see more complex cases than others which may make their success rate seem lower.

At Flinders Fertility, the latest independent data shows strong outcomes for patients beginning their IVF journey:
• Women under 35 have a 66% chance of having a baby from their first egg collection, compared with a 52% national average
• Women aged 35–42 have a 35% chance, compared with a 30% national average

Please join us in wishing Dr Susie Kim well as she heads off on maternity leave ahead of welcoming her first baby.💛

Susie is not only an outstanding and caring fertility doctor, but also incredibly generous with her time and knowledge. Alongside her clinical work, she lectures at Adelaide Uni and plays a key role in running educational sessions for our team and local GPs across Adelaide. She will be greatly missed by all of us!

We’re thrilled about this special chapter for Susie and her husband, and we look forward to welcoming her back in 2027.

Wishing you all the very best, Susie — enjoy every moment💐

Understanding IVF Success: What Does “Births per Egg Retrieval” Really Mean?

When people look at IVF success rates, one of the most important measures to understand is “births per complete egg retrieval cycle.”

An egg retrieval (or egg collection) is the first major step in an IVF cycle. From that single procedure, multiple embryos may be created, and these can be transferred over time — including a fresh transfer and one or more frozen embryo transfers.

This measure looks at the overall chance of having a baby from everything that comes from one egg collection, not just a single embryo transfer.

Why does this matter?
Because it reflects the true success of a full IVF treatment journey, taking into account embryo quality, laboratory science, and clinical decision-making across both fresh and frozen transfers.

At Flinders Fertility, the latest independent data shows:
• Women under 35 have a 54% chance of having a baby from one egg collection, compared with a 46% national average
• Women aged 35–42 have a 30% chance, compared with a 23% national average

🎄Managing Infertility During the Christmas Season 🎄

Family get-togethers can be stressful at the best of times. But if you’re dealing with infertility, the festive season with its parties, family gatherings, and focus on children can bring up painful emotions and add pressure to an already difficult situation.

You can’t make the pain disappear, but a little planning and self-compassion can make the season more manageable.

Be selective with invitations.
It’s okay to say no! Choose events that feel comfortable and skip the ones that might be too emotionally taxing — especially those where you know there will be lots of children or pregnant friends. You don’t need to attend every tradition or gathering. Looking after yourself (and your partner) is the priority.

Prepare for difficult conversations.
Well-meaning relatives might ask personal or insensitive questions. Think ahead about how you want to respond — even rehearsing a few short answers can help you feel more in control. Remember, you don’t have to share details unless you want to.

Make space for your feelings.
Allow yourself moments of quiet reflection, and give yourself permission to feel sad. Most importantly, set aside time to connect with your partner and share how you’re both coping. Supporting each other through the holidays can make a big difference.

This Christmas, be gentle with yourself. Your feelings are valid, and it’s perfectly okay to protect your peace. 💛
